À propos de Mechanical Thrombectomy (Stroke)
A catheter is passed from the groin or wrist to the blocked vessel, and the clot is pulled out with a retrievable stent or sucked out through a wide catheter. It is generally used for large vessel blockages and often follows clot-busting medicine. Speed matters, with best results when treatment starts within hours and, in selected patients on imaging, up to about a day.
Successful reopening of the artery can change the course of a stroke, and many patients recover much more function than without it. Outcomes depend on how quickly flow is restored, the size of the stroke at the start, your age and the artery involved. The procedure does not reverse damage that has already occurred.
Because it is an emergency treatment, it is not something planned as a trip. Afterwards expect several days in a stroke unit, then rehabilitation, which is central to recovery. Before travelling home, arrange stroke follow-up, secondary prevention such as blood pressure and clot-prevention medicines and keep scans and the procedure report.
Généralement adapté si
- A large-vessel blockage causing acute stroke, confirmed on CT or MR angiography.
- Treatment within the time window set by imaging, typically up to 6 hours and in selected cases up to about 24 hours.
- Salvageable brain tissue shown on perfusion imaging.
- Reasonable independence before the stroke.
Il peut falloir attendre si
- Large completed stroke with little salvageable brain.
- Intracranial bleeding on the scan.
- No large-vessel clot to remove.
- Very poor prior function, or terminal illness, may limit benefit.
Comment se préparer
- This is an emergency treatment, so there is little time for preparation. Reach a stroke-capable hospital immediately.
- If time allows, bring medicine lists, a record of blood thinners and the time symptoms began.
- Family should be ready to give consent and history quickly.
- After treatment, plan for stroke unit care and later rehabilitation, which may begin abroad or at home.
- Ask about arranging medical transfer home when the team considers you fit.
Questions à poser à votre chirurgien

- What stroke unit and rehabilitation will I have afterwards?
- How is secondary stroke prevention planned?

- No 24-hour stroke team or angiography suite.
- No CT or MR angiography before treatment.
- Treatment recommended long after the time window without imaging.
- No stroke unit or rehabilitation to follow.
