À propos de Transplantation pulmonaire

Under general anaesthesia, the surgeon removes the diseased lung and attaches a donor lung to the airway, artery and veins, sometimes using a heart-lung machine. A single lung may suit some conditions, while a double lung transplant is used for others, particularly when infection is present on both sides. Assessment before listing includes lung, heart and general fitness.

A successful transplant can greatly improve breathing and activity levels. Results depend on the underlying disease, your age and fitness, infections and rejection, including long-term chronic rejection, which is the main limit on lung survival. Lifelong anti-rejection medicines and regular lung-function tests, scans and sometimes biopsies are required.

Expect around three weeks in hospital, then pulmonary rehabilitation and frequent clinic visits close to the transplant team for the first months. You will need a carer with you. Ask how organs are allocated, how soon you may be called, and how check-ups and medicines will be handled at home.

Il peut falloir attendre si

  • Current smoking, substance use or poor adherence.
  • Severe frailty or malnutrition.
  • Certain drug-resistant infections, depending on the centre's policy.
Comment se préparer

  2. Join pulmonary rehabilitation on your doctor's advice to keep strength.
  3. Review all medicines, including oxygen and steroids, with your doctor; do not change doses yourself.
  4. Ask about being listed in the destination country and how long you must stay nearby.
  5. Arrange a fitness-to-fly review and medical oxygen for travel.
Questions à poser à votre chirurgien

  2. Does your programme accept international patients, and how long is the typical wait?
  3. What are your one-year and five-year survival results?
  4. How do you monitor rejection and infection, and what can my local doctor do?
  5. Do you use ex-vivo lung perfusion or extended-criteria lungs?
  6. What is the plan if chronic lung rejection develops?
