À propos de Colectomie laparoscopique

The operation is done under general anaesthesia and generally takes two to four hours. The surgeon makes several small cuts, inflates the abdomen with gas and uses a camera to free the diseased colon and its blood supply. The section is removed through a slightly larger cut, and the two ends are joined, or an ostomy is formed. Open surgery is sometimes needed if the procedure cannot be completed safely.

Compared with open surgery, the laparoscopic route usually brings less pain, a shorter hospital stay and quicker bowel recovery, with equal cancer outcomes in suitable patients. Results depend on the condition treated, general health, the extent of resection and the surgeon's experience. Complications such as leakage at the join or infection are uncommon but serious.

Expect about five to seven days in hospital, and plan to remain nearby for around two weeks before flying, longer if there were complications. Bring scans, pathology and colonoscopy reports. Wear support stockings and walk often to reduce clot risk. Your home team will need the operation report and, if cancer is involved, the pathology results for further treatment.

Comment se préparer
  1. Colonoscopy, CT scan and blood tests, including haemoglobin and, for cancer, tumour markers, are the usual work-up.
  2. Bowel preparation and antibiotic instructions are given by your surgeon.
  3. Review blood thinners, diabetes medicines and other regular tablets with your doctor; change nothing yourself.
  4. Improve nutrition and stop smoking before surgery where possible.
  5. Discuss and mark a possible stoma site with the stoma nurse before surgery.
Questions à poser à votre chirurgien
  1. Which part of the colon will be removed, and why?
  2. Is laparoscopic surgery suitable for me, and when would you convert to open?
  3. Will I need a stoma, and is it temporary?
  4. For cancer, how many lymph nodes will be examined and who reviews the pathology?
  5. What is your enhanced-recovery protocol?
  6. What follow-up, scans and colonoscopy are needed at home?
Signaux d'alerte à surveiller en comparant les hôpitaux
  • No discussion of the possibility of converting to open surgery.
  • No staging scans for cancer before surgery.
  • No multidisciplinary tumour board discussion for cancer.
  • Surgeon with little laparoscopic colon experience.
  • No stoma counselling when one is possible.
