À propos de Craniotomie éveillée
You are sedated or asleep while the skull is opened, then woken and asked to talk, name objects or move a limb while the surgeon maps nearby brain function with gentle electrical stimulation. Removal continues up to the edge of areas that must be spared. You are then re-sedated while the wound is closed. The scalp is numbed, so the brain itself is not felt.
The aim is to remove as much of the lesion as is safe while protecting language and movement. Outcomes depend on the tumour type, its position and how well you can cooperate during testing. Some temporary difficulty with speech or strength is common after surgery and usually improves, but results vary between people.
Plan for about a week in hospital and a recovery of several weeks before a long journey. Expect a meeting beforehand to rehearse the tasks you will be asked to do, and bring any glasses or hearing aids. If the tumour needs further treatment, arrange oncology follow-up at home and carry your pathology report and scans.
