À propos de underprojected cheekbones

Ce qu'il faut savoir

There are usually no physical symptoms; people notice a flat profile, tired-looking under-eye hollows or loss of definition in photographs. Assessment is by a facial surgeon who examines the face from the front and side, and may use scans to judge the bone. The appearance tends to become more noticeable with ageing as volume falls.

Non-surgical options come first and include hyaluronic acid filler or fat grafting to restore volume. For a lasting change, custom or standard cheek implants made of silicone or similar material are placed through the mouth or lower eyelid. Treatment abroad is typically considered by people wanting an experienced facial surgeon at planned, elective timing.

Bilan avant le départ

Examens à déjà réalisés

  • Clear, front-on, side-on and three-quarter photographs of your face in natural light, to help the surgeon assess projection.
  • A record of any previous facial surgery, fillers or implants, with dates and products used.
  • A list of medicines, especially blood thinners and supplements, and any history of bleeding or healing problems.
  • Any facial or sinus CT or X-ray you already have, particularly if you have had facial trauma.
  • Notes on what you want to change, so the surgeon can judge if cheek implants address it.

Deuxième avis

Quand obtenir un second regard

  • You are unsure whether your concern is bone projection or loss of soft tissue volume, which are treated differently.
  • You have been offered implants but have never discussed less invasive options such as fillers.
  • You have had previous facial implants or fillers and need advice before further treatment.
  • The proposed size or shape of implant seems likely to give an unnatural result for your face.

Questions à poser

  1. Is my cheek flatness due to bone shape, volume loss or both?
  2. Would fillers or fat transfer achieve a similar result, and how long would they last?
  3. What implant material, size and shape would suit my face, and can I see examples?
  4. What are the risks, such as implant shifting, asymmetry or numbness, and how are they managed?
  5. How long will swelling last, and when will I see the final result?
  6. Can an implant be removed or changed later if I am unhappy?

Perspectives

Pronostic réaliste

Cheek implants usually give a lasting, natural improvement in projection when the size and shape are well matched to the face. Swelling settles over several weeks, and the final contour is judged at around three months. Satisfaction depends on realistic expectations, bone structure and surgical planning. Possible problems include asymmetry, implant shift, infection or temporary numbness, and a small number of people need revision or removal.

Bilan diagnostique

04 · FAQ

Questions fréquentes sur underprojected cheekbones

Are cheek implants permanent?

Implants are designed to be long-lasting and can stay in place for many years. They can be removed or changed later if needed. Fillers and fat transfer are alternatives that are less permanent.

Will cheek implants look natural?

Results look natural when the implant size and shape match your facial bones and proportions. Careful planning and realistic goals matter. Swelling hides the final result for several weeks.

How long is recovery?

Most people have swelling and bruising for one to two weeks, with the final contour settling over around three months. You are usually advised to avoid strenuous activity for a few weeks.

Can I fly soon after surgery?

Many people can fly after a few days, but you should follow your surgeon's advice. Swelling can be uncomfortable, and a review before you travel home is usually advised.

Clinical context

Working up underprojected cheekbones properly

A condition like underprojected cheekbones is rarely well-served by jumping straight to treatment shopping. The sequence below is what a chirurgie esthétique specialist would expect to see completed — and the absence of any step is the right cue to delay travel decisions.

Diagnostic workup, in sequence

  1. First-line clinical assessment

History, physical exam, and risk-factor review by a senior generalist or chirurgie esthétique specialist. Symptoms list, family history, prior workup notes, and current medication list should travel with the patient.

  2. Standard imaging + labs

Baseline blood work, condition-specific imaging (ultrasound / X-ray / MRI / CT — depending on indication), and ECG / pulmonary function as relevant. Bring digital copies of any prior imaging — saves repeat scans and the cost that goes with them.

  3. Specialist diagnostic workup

Procedure-specific tests — biopsy, cardiac catheterisation, endoscopy, or genetic / molecular profiling depending on the suspected diagnosis. Done at the centre that will treat, ideally, so results integrate cleanly into the treatment plan.

  4. Multidisciplinary review (where indicated)

Cancer, complex cardiac, transplant, and rare-disease cases should be reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel — surgical, medical, imaging, and pathology — before any treatment commits. Single-discipline plans for complex disease are a quality red flag.

When to escalate to specialist review

  • New, persistent, or worsening symptoms beyond the usual pattern — particularly anything that disrupts work, sleep, or daily function for >2 weeks.
  • Symptoms accompanied by red-flag features (unintentional weight loss, night sweats, bleeding, severe pain, neurological signs).
  • Any "this feels different" instinct — especially with recurrent or chronic conditions where you know your baseline well.
  • A second-opinion misalignment with your current care plan — when two qualified clinicians disagree, the case warrants a third review before committing.

Before you book international travel

  • Confirm your specific diagnosis is fully worked up before you commit to a treatment plan abroad. Travelling for the workup is fine; travelling for treatment without the workup done is not.
  • Get your case reviewed remotely by the destination centre's team before you book flights — credible international patient programs review imaging + reports before they confirm the surgical plan.
  • Bring a digital + physical copy of your full medical record: imaging on USB drive in DICOM format, labs in PDF, current medication list with dosages, allergies, and any prior surgical reports.
  • Plan for the post-op rehabilitation phase before you fly — the surgery itself is rarely the bottleneck.
  • Confirm that follow-up imaging and any necessary in-person reviews can be done at home — a treatment plan that requires repeat international trips is more burdensome (and more expensive) than the headline procedure.
