Inferior Turbinate Hypertrophy

À propos de inferior turbinate hypertrophy

Ce qu'il faut savoir

The main symptom is persistent nasal blockage, often alternating between sides, with a runny nose, snoring and disturbed sleep. Allergy, rhinitis, overuse of decongestant sprays and a bent nasal septum can contribute. An ear, nose and throat specialist examines the nose with a small camera and tests for allergy. The condition is not dangerous.

Treatment starts with steroid nasal sprays, saline rinses and antihistamines, and avoiding decongestant spray overuse. If blockage persists, turbinoplasty reduces the turbinate with radiofrequency, a microdebrider or other methods, often done together with septum straightening. It is usually a day-case operation with a short recovery. Treatment abroad is sometimes combined with other nasal surgery, but there is rarely need to travel for it.

Bilan avant le départ

Examens à déjà réalisés

  • Nasal endoscopy or examination report showing enlarged turbinates, and whether the septum is deviated.
  • CT scan of the sinuses, if requested, to rule out sinus disease and polyps.
  • Allergy testing results, because allergic rhinitis is a frequent cause.
  • A record of nasal steroid sprays, antihistamines and decongestants tried, with duration and response.
  • Details of any previous nasal surgery and any decongestant spray overuse.

Deuxième avis

Quand obtenir un second regard

  • Surgery has been suggested without a proper trial of nasal steroid sprays or allergy treatment.
  • You have a deviated septum as well, and want to know whether both need treatment.
  • You have had turbinate surgery previously and have severe dryness or a sensation of being unable to breathe.
  • Long-term decongestant spray use may be the actual cause of the blockage.

Questions à poser

  1. Is the blockage due to turbinates, the septum, allergies or something else?
  2. Have I had a fair trial of medical treatment?
  3. Which reduction technique do you recommend, and why?
  4. What are the risks of dryness, crusting or empty nose syndrome?
  5. Will the benefit last, and could the turbinates enlarge again?
  6. Should my septum be corrected at the same time?

Perspectives

Pronostic réaliste

Turbinate reduction relieves nasal blockage in most people, with good results lasting for years, particularly when allergy and septal problems are also addressed. Some enlargement can recur over time. Only the necessary amount of tissue should be removed, because over-resection can cause dryness, crusting and, rarely, a persistent feeling of being unable to breathe despite open airways. Recovery is quick, with crusting for a few weeks.

Bilan diagnostique

04 · FAQ

Questions fréquentes sur inferior turbinate hypertrophy

Do nasal sprays fix enlarged turbinates?

Steroid sprays and allergy treatment help many people. If the turbinates remain enlarged after a proper trial, a reduction procedure may be offered.

Is turbinate surgery painful?

Most people have mild congestion and crusting for a few weeks rather than severe pain. Procedures are often done as day cases.

Can turbinates grow back?

Some regrowth can occur over time, especially with untreated allergy. Over-reduction is avoided because it causes dryness.

Clinical context

Working up inferior turbinate hypertrophy properly

A condition like inferior turbinate hypertrophy is rarely well-served by jumping straight to treatment shopping. The sequence below is what a orl / oto-rhino-laryngologie specialist would expect to see completed — and the absence of any step is the right cue to delay travel decisions.

Diagnostic workup, in sequence

  1. First-line clinical assessment

History, physical exam, and risk-factor review by a senior generalist or orl / oto-rhino-laryngologie specialist. Symptoms list, family history, prior workup notes, and current medication list should travel with the patient.

  2. Standard imaging + labs

Baseline blood work, condition-specific imaging (ultrasound / X-ray / MRI / CT — depending on indication), and ECG / pulmonary function as relevant. Bring digital copies of any prior imaging — saves repeat scans and the cost that goes with them.

  3. Specialist diagnostic workup

Procedure-specific tests — biopsy, cardiac catheterisation, endoscopy, or genetic / molecular profiling depending on the suspected diagnosis. Done at the centre that will treat, ideally, so results integrate cleanly into the treatment plan.

  4. Multidisciplinary review (where indicated)

Cancer, complex cardiac, transplant, and rare-disease cases should be reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel — surgical, medical, imaging, and pathology — before any treatment commits. Single-discipline plans for complex disease are a quality red flag.

When to escalate to specialist review

  • New, persistent, or worsening symptoms beyond the usual pattern — particularly anything that disrupts work, sleep, or daily function for >2 weeks.
  • Symptoms accompanied by red-flag features (unintentional weight loss, night sweats, bleeding, severe pain, neurological signs).
  • Any "this feels different" instinct — especially with recurrent or chronic conditions where you know your baseline well.
  • A second-opinion misalignment with your current care plan — when two qualified clinicians disagree, the case warrants a third review before committing.

Before you book international travel

  • Confirm your specific diagnosis is fully worked up before you commit to a treatment plan abroad. Travelling for the workup is fine; travelling for treatment without the workup done is not.
  • Get your case reviewed remotely by the destination centre's team before you book flights — credible international patient programs review imaging + reports before they confirm the surgical plan.
  • Bring a digital + physical copy of your full medical record: imaging on USB drive in DICOM format, labs in PDF, current medication list with dosages, allergies, and any prior surgical reports.
  • Plan for the post-op rehabilitation phase before you fly — the surgery itself is rarely the bottleneck.
  • Confirm that follow-up imaging and any necessary in-person reviews can be done at home — a treatment plan that requires repeat international trips is more burdensome (and more expensive) than the headline procedure.
