À propos de pediatric adenoid hypertrophy

Ce qu'il faut savoir

Children breathe through the mouth, snore, have a blocked or runny nose, and sleep restlessly, and some have repeated ear infections or glue ear. Diagnosis is by history, examination and, if needed, a small nasal endoscope or a side neck X-ray. The adenoids naturally shrink from about school age, so symptoms often ease with time.

Mild symptoms are managed by waiting and using steroid nasal sprays for a few months. Adenoidectomy, a short day-case operation under general anaesthetic, is considered when there is persistent blockage, sleep-disordered breathing, recurrent ear infections or glue ear that does not settle. Recovery takes a few days. Treatment abroad is rarely necessary but may be considered for specialist paediatric ENT care.

Bilan avant le départ

Examens à déjà réalisés

  • Description of symptoms: mouth breathing, snoring, pauses in breathing at night, daytime sleepiness, and how long they have lasted.
  • Lateral neck X-ray or nasal endoscopy report showing the degree to which the adenoids block the airway.
  • Sleep study results if breathing pauses were suspected, and any tonsil size assessment.
  • Hearing test and tympanometry, since adenoids often contribute to fluid behind the eardrum.
  • Records of treatments tried, such as nasal steroid sprays or allergy treatment, and the number of ear or sinus infections.

Deuxième avis

Quand obtenir un second regard

  • Adenoidectomy is recommended after only a few weeks of symptoms and without a trial of nasal spray or allergy review.
  • Your child has loud snoring with breathing pauses and no one has discussed a sleep study.
  • Symptoms persist after adenoid removal, which may suggest allergy, tonsil enlargement or another cause.
  • Fluid behind the ears and hearing loss are present and the ears have not been tested separately.

Questions à poser

  1. How large are the adenoids, and are they the main cause of my child's symptoms?
  2. Would a nasal spray or allergy treatment help before surgery?
  3. Does my child need a sleep study, and should the tonsils be assessed as well?
  4. What are the risks of the operation, and what is recovery like?
  5. Will the adenoids grow back?
  6. Are my child's ears and hearing affected, and should they be treated at the same time?

Perspectives

Pronostic réaliste

Adenoids usually shrink naturally as children grow, so many symptoms improve with time. When removal is needed, adenoidectomy relieves nasal blockage, snoring and sleep disturbance in most children and often improves recurring ear problems. Regrowth can occasionally happen, especially in younger children or those with allergy. Outcomes depend on the child's age, the cause of the blockage, the presence of allergy and whether the tonsils are also enlarged.

Bilan diagnostique

04 · FAQ

Questions fréquentes sur pediatric adenoid hypertrophy

Does my child definitely need surgery?

Not always. Mild cases often improve with time or nasal sprays. Surgery is considered when there is persistent blockage, sleep-disordered breathing, repeated ear problems or hearing loss.

Can adenoids grow back?

Occasionally a little tissue regrows, more often in young children or with allergy, but it rarely causes the same level of symptoms.

Will removing them harm my child's immunity?

No evidence shows that removing adenoids causes meaningful lasting immune problems.

When can my child fly after surgery?

Usually after the early recovery period and once the surgeon is happy there is no bleeding; ask for specific advice.

Clinical context

Working up pediatric adenoid hypertrophy properly

A condition like pediatric adenoid hypertrophy is rarely well-served by jumping straight to treatment shopping. The sequence below is what a orl / oto-rhino-laryngologie specialist would expect to see completed — and the absence of any step is the right cue to delay travel decisions.

Diagnostic workup, in sequence

  1. First-line clinical assessment

History, physical exam, and risk-factor review by a senior generalist or orl / oto-rhino-laryngologie specialist. Symptoms list, family history, prior workup notes, and current medication list should travel with the patient.

  2. Standard imaging + labs

Baseline blood work, condition-specific imaging (ultrasound / X-ray / MRI / CT — depending on indication), and ECG / pulmonary function as relevant. Bring digital copies of any prior imaging — saves repeat scans and the cost that goes with them.

  3. Specialist diagnostic workup

Procedure-specific tests — biopsy, cardiac catheterisation, endoscopy, or genetic / molecular profiling depending on the suspected diagnosis. Done at the centre that will treat, ideally, so results integrate cleanly into the treatment plan.

  4. Multidisciplinary review (where indicated)

Cancer, complex cardiac, transplant, and rare-disease cases should be reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel — surgical, medical, imaging, and pathology — before any treatment commits. Single-discipline plans for complex disease are a quality red flag.

When to escalate to specialist review

  • New, persistent, or worsening symptoms beyond the usual pattern — particularly anything that disrupts work, sleep, or daily function for >2 weeks.
  • Symptoms accompanied by red-flag features (unintentional weight loss, night sweats, bleeding, severe pain, neurological signs).
  • Any "this feels different" instinct — especially with recurrent or chronic conditions where you know your baseline well.
  • A second-opinion misalignment with your current care plan — when two qualified clinicians disagree, the case warrants a third review before committing.

Before you book international travel

  • Confirm your specific diagnosis is fully worked up before you commit to a treatment plan abroad. Travelling for the workup is fine; travelling for treatment without the workup done is not.
  • Get your case reviewed remotely by the destination centre's team before you book flights — credible international patient programs review imaging + reports before they confirm the surgical plan.
  • Bring a digital + physical copy of your full medical record: imaging on USB drive in DICOM format, labs in PDF, current medication list with dosages, allergies, and any prior surgical reports.
  • Plan for the post-op rehabilitation phase before you fly — the surgery itself is rarely the bottleneck.
  • Confirm that follow-up imaging and any necessary in-person reviews can be done at home — a treatment plan that requires repeat international trips is more burdensome (and more expensive) than the headline procedure.
