Morton's Neuroma
Morton's neuroma is a thickening of the nerve between the toes, usually the third and fourth, causing burning pain and numbness in the ball of the foot. It is more common in women and in people who wear tight or high-heeled shoes.

À propos de morton's neuroma
Ce qu'il faut savoir
People describe the feeling of a pebble or a folded sock under the toes, with pain that eases when shoes come off. A doctor can often reproduce the symptoms by squeezing the forefoot and pressing between the toes. Ultrasound or MRI can confirm the diagnosis and rule out other causes. Symptoms often worsen if shoes are not changed.
Treatment begins with wider, lower-heeled shoes, cushioned insoles or metatarsal pads, and anti-inflammatory medicines. A steroid injection can give relief for some months. If symptoms persist, options include alcohol injection, radiofrequency treatment, and surgery to remove the thickened nerve or release the ligament above it. Surgery leaves permanent numbness between the toes. Treatment abroad is rarely necessary.
Bilan avant le départ
Examens à déjà réalisés
- Details of the exact location, quality and timing of your pain, and the footwear that worsens it.
- An ultrasound or MRI of the forefoot with the report, which can confirm a neuroma and exclude other causes.
- Weight-bearing foot X-rays, to check the toe joints and bones.
- Records of insoles, shoe changes or steroid injections already tried.
- Details of any diabetes or nerve problems elsewhere.
Deuxième avis
Quand obtenir un second regard
- Pain persists after several months of wide shoes, padding and an injection and surgery is advised.
- Your symptoms affect more than one space or both feet, which makes a simple neuroma less likely.
- You have diabetes or a back problem that could also cause foot nerve symptoms.
- You had neuroma surgery before and the pain has returned.

Questions à poser
- Are my symptoms and scan really consistent with a neuroma, or could it be joint inflammation or a nerve problem?
- Would better footwear and insoles help in my case?
- What can an injection do, and how often can it be repeated?
- What does surgery involve, and what numbness should I expect afterwards?
- What is the risk of the pain returning after surgery?
- How long until I can walk and wear normal shoes?
Perspectives
Pronostic réaliste
Most people improve without surgery through wider shoes, cushioning insoles and sometimes injections. When surgery to remove the nerve is needed, a large majority obtain good pain relief, though permanent numbness between the toes is expected. A small number develop a stump neuroma with recurring pain. Earlier treatment generally works better.

Bilan diagnostique

04 · FAQ
Questions fréquentes sur morton's neuroma
Do I need surgery for Morton's neuroma?
Often not. Wider shoes, metatarsal pads and injections settle many cases. Surgery is considered when pain persists for months despite these measures.
Which shoes help?
Shoes with a wide toe box, low heel and cushioned sole reduce pressure on the nerve. High heels and narrow shoes tend to worsen symptoms.
Will numbness remain after surgery?
Removing the nerve usually leaves a small patch of permanent numbness between the toes. Most people find this acceptable compared with the pain.
Can the neuroma grow back?
A stump neuroma can form after removal in some people, causing pain again. This is less common but possible, and may need further treatment.
Clinical context
Working up morton's neuroma properly
A condition like morton's neuroma is rarely well-served by jumping straight to treatment shopping. The sequence below is what a orthopédie specialist would expect to see completed — and the absence of any step is the right cue to delay travel decisions.
Diagnostic workup, in sequence
- First-line clinical assessment
History, physical exam, and risk-factor review by a senior generalist or orthopédie specialist. Symptoms list, family history, prior workup notes, and current medication list should travel with the patient.
- Standard imaging + labs
Baseline blood work, condition-specific imaging (ultrasound / X-ray / MRI / CT — depending on indication), and ECG / pulmonary function as relevant. Bring digital copies of any prior imaging — saves repeat scans and the cost that goes with them.
- Specialist diagnostic workup
Procedure-specific tests — biopsy, cardiac catheterisation, endoscopy, or genetic / molecular profiling depending on the suspected diagnosis. Done at the centre that will treat, ideally, so results integrate cleanly into the treatment plan.
- Multidisciplinary review (where indicated)
Cancer, complex cardiac, transplant, and rare-disease cases should be reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel — surgical, medical, imaging, and pathology — before any treatment commits. Single-discipline plans for complex disease are a quality red flag.
When to escalate to specialist review
- New, persistent, or worsening symptoms beyond the usual pattern — particularly anything that disrupts work, sleep, or daily function for >2 weeks.
- Symptoms accompanied by red-flag features (unintentional weight loss, night sweats, bleeding, severe pain, neurological signs).
- Any "this feels different" instinct — especially with recurrent or chronic conditions where you know your baseline well.
- A second-opinion misalignment with your current care plan — when two qualified clinicians disagree, the case warrants a third review before committing.
Before you book international travel
- Confirm your specific diagnosis is fully worked up before you commit to a treatment plan abroad. Travelling for the workup is fine; travelling for treatment without the workup done is not.
- Get your case reviewed remotely by the destination centre's team before you book flights — credible international patient programs review imaging + reports before they confirm the surgical plan.
- Bring a digital + physical copy of your full medical record: imaging on USB drive in DICOM format, labs in PDF, current medication list with dosages, allergies, and any prior surgical reports.
- Plan for the post-op rehabilitation phase before you fly — the surgery itself is rarely the bottleneck.
- Confirm that follow-up imaging and any necessary in-person reviews can be done at home — a treatment plan that requires repeat international trips is more burdensome (and more expensive) than the headline procedure.
