Excess Body Fat (Localised)

Localised excess body fat is a stubborn deposit of fat in areas such as the abdomen, flanks, thighs or arms that persists despite diet and exercise. It is largely determined by genetics and body shape.

À propos de excess body fat (localised)

Ce qu'il faut savoir

It is not a disease and rarely causes physical symptoms, but people may be self-conscious about their body contour. Assessment is a clinical examination of fat distribution, skin quality, weight stability and general health. Fat in these areas is resistant to weight loss, and body weight should be stable before any procedure is considered.

Healthy diet and exercise improve overall weight but cannot spot-reduce fat. Surgical contouring with liposuction removes fat cells permanently from targeted areas, with techniques such as VASER ultrasound assisted liposuction giving more refined results. Fat can also be transferred to reshape the buttocks in a Brazilian butt lift (BBL), a procedure with serious risks that must be performed carefully. Treatment abroad is commonly considered for cosmetic body contouring.

Bilan avant le départ

Examens à déjà réalisés

  • Your current weight, height and BMI, and a record of how stable your weight has been over recent months.
  • A full medical history including diabetes, heart or lung disease, clotting problems and previous operations.
  • A list of medicines and supplements, especially blood thinners, aspirin and herbal products that increase bleeding.
  • Standard pre-operative blood tests, ECG where advised, and pregnancy status or plans.
  • Clear, dated photographs of the areas concerned, and any earlier liposuction or abdominal surgery records.

Deuxième avis

Quand obtenir un second regard

  • You have been told liposuction can replace weight loss when your BMI is high.
  • The surgeon proposes removing a very large volume of fat in a single session.
  • Your skin is loose and you have not been told liposuction may not tighten it, and that an abdominoplasty might suit you better.
  • You want to combine liposuction with a fat transfer to the buttocks and want to discuss the added risk.

Questions à poser

  1. Is my fat suitable for liposuction, or would skin removal be a better option?
  2. What volume of fat is safe to remove in one session in my case?
  3. Which technique do you recommend and why?
  4. What recovery should I expect, including compression garments and bruising?
  5. What are the risks, such as uneven contours, fluid collections and blood clots?
  6. When is it safe to fly home after the procedure?

Perspectives

Pronostic réaliste

Liposuction permanently removes fat cells from the treated area, giving a lasting change in contour when weight stays stable. Swelling and bruising take weeks to settle and the final shape may take three to six months. Fat can still accumulate in other areas if weight is gained. Results depend on skin quality, volume removed and technique, and irregularities may need further correction.

Bilan diagnostique

04 · FAQ

Questions fréquentes sur excess body fat (localised)

Is liposuction a weight-loss treatment?

No. It reshapes stubborn areas and is best at or near a stable, healthy weight. It does not treat obesity or improve metabolic health.

Will the fat come back?

Treated fat cells are permanently removed, but remaining fat cells can enlarge if you gain weight, in treated areas or elsewhere.

Can I fly after liposuction?

Most surgeons advise waiting several days to a couple of weeks, because of the clot risk with swelling and reduced mobility. Walk regularly, wear compression and follow your surgeon's advice.

Clinical context

Working up excess body fat (localised) properly

A condition like excess body fat (localised) is rarely well-served by jumping straight to treatment shopping. The sequence below is what a chirurgie esthétique specialist would expect to see completed — and the absence of any step is the right cue to delay travel decisions.

Diagnostic workup, in sequence

  1. First-line clinical assessment

History, physical exam, and risk-factor review by a senior generalist or chirurgie esthétique specialist. Symptoms list, family history, prior workup notes, and current medication list should travel with the patient.

  2. Standard imaging + labs

Baseline blood work, condition-specific imaging (ultrasound / X-ray / MRI / CT — depending on indication), and ECG / pulmonary function as relevant. Bring digital copies of any prior imaging — saves repeat scans and the cost that goes with them.

  3. Specialist diagnostic workup

Procedure-specific tests — biopsy, cardiac catheterisation, endoscopy, or genetic / molecular profiling depending on the suspected diagnosis. Done at the centre that will treat, ideally, so results integrate cleanly into the treatment plan.

  4. Multidisciplinary review (where indicated)

Cancer, complex cardiac, transplant, and rare-disease cases should be reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel — surgical, medical, imaging, and pathology — before any treatment commits. Single-discipline plans for complex disease are a quality red flag.

When to escalate to specialist review

  • New, persistent, or worsening symptoms beyond the usual pattern — particularly anything that disrupts work, sleep, or daily function for >2 weeks.
  • Symptoms accompanied by red-flag features (unintentional weight loss, night sweats, bleeding, severe pain, neurological signs).
  • Any "this feels different" instinct — especially with recurrent or chronic conditions where you know your baseline well.
  • A second-opinion misalignment with your current care plan — when two qualified clinicians disagree, the case warrants a third review before committing.

Before you book international travel

  • Confirm your specific diagnosis is fully worked up before you commit to a treatment plan abroad. Travelling for the workup is fine; travelling for treatment without the workup done is not.
  • Get your case reviewed remotely by the destination centre's team before you book flights — credible international patient programs review imaging + reports before they confirm the surgical plan.
  • Bring a digital + physical copy of your full medical record: imaging on USB drive in DICOM format, labs in PDF, current medication list with dosages, allergies, and any prior surgical reports.
  • Plan for the post-op rehabilitation phase before you fly — the surgery itself is rarely the bottleneck.
  • Confirm that follow-up imaging and any necessary in-person reviews can be done at home — a treatment plan that requires repeat international trips is more burdensome (and more expensive) than the headline procedure.
