Inguinal Hernia
An inguinal hernia occurs when tissue, usually bowel or fat, pushes through a weak area of the abdominal wall in the groin. It is far more common in men and can occur at any age.

À propos de inguinal hernia
Ce qu'il faut savoir
It appears as a bulge in the groin or scrotum that is more obvious on standing, coughing or lifting, sometimes with an ache or dragging feeling. Diagnosis is by examination, with ultrasound if unclear. Hernias tend to enlarge slowly. Severe pain, a hard lump that cannot be pushed back, or vomiting suggests strangulation and needs emergency care.
Men with minimal or no symptoms can safely watch and wait, but hernias do not heal on their own, and most people eventually choose repair. Surgery closes the defect and reinforces it with mesh, either through an open groin incision or by laparoscopic keyhole technique, usually as day surgery. Recovery is typically quicker with keyhole repair. Treatment abroad is considered mainly for planned, non-urgent repair.
Bilan avant le départ
Examens à déjà réalisés
- Examination notes or ultrasound report confirming the hernia, its side (one or both) and whether it descends into the scrotum.
- A description of symptoms: aching, bulging on standing or coughing, and any episode where the lump became hard or painful.
- Details of earlier hernia repairs or groin operations, including whether mesh was used.
- A list of medicines, particularly blood thinners, and heart or lung results if you have other conditions affecting anaesthesia.
- Information about activities involving heavy lifting, chronic cough or straining, which affect timing and recovery.
Deuxième avis
Quand obtenir un second regard
- You have no symptoms and surgery has been urgently recommended without discussion of watchful waiting.
- Your hernia has recurred after a previous repair, which may call for a different approach.
- You have hernias on both sides and need advice on whether keyhole repair is suitable for you.
- You have had severe groin pain after previous surgery and want advice on mesh and nerve-sparing technique.

Questions à poser
- Is this a direct, indirect or femoral hernia, and does it need repair now?
- Would open or keyhole repair suit me better, given my work and any earlier surgery?
- Which type of anaesthesia will be used, and can I go home the same day?
- What is the chance of long-term groin pain or recurrence with the method you propose?
- What are the warning signs that the hernia is trapped, and what do I do if they appear?
- When can I return to lifting, driving and air travel?
Perspectives
Pronostic réaliste
Repair is one of the most common operations, and most people go home the same day and resume normal activity within two to four weeks. Recurrence is uncommon with modern mesh repair. A small number develop persistent groin pain. Smoking, obesity and heavy straining raise the risk of problems. Small, painless hernias in men can often be watched safely.

Bilan diagnostique

Do I have to have surgery?
Not always. Men with a small hernia without symptoms can often be watched safely. Repair is advised for symptoms, or any hernia that cannot be pushed back.
Is keyhole surgery better than open repair?
Keyhole repair often means less early pain and faster return to activity, and suits hernias on both sides. Open repair is suitable under local anaesthetic and for some complex cases.
Can I fly after hernia repair?
Many people fly within a few days after keyhole repair and a little longer after open repair. Avoid heavy lifting for several weeks, and follow your surgeon's advice.
Clinical context
Working up inguinal hernia properly
A condition like inguinal hernia is rarely well-served by jumping straight to treatment shopping. The sequence below is what a chirurgie digestive specialist would expect to see completed — and the absence of any step is the right cue to delay travel decisions.
Diagnostic workup, in sequence
- First-line clinical assessment
History, physical exam, and risk-factor review by a senior generalist or chirurgie digestive specialist. Symptoms list, family history, prior workup notes, and current medication list should travel with the patient.
- Standard imaging + labs
Baseline blood work, condition-specific imaging (ultrasound / X-ray / MRI / CT — depending on indication), and ECG / pulmonary function as relevant. Bring digital copies of any prior imaging — saves repeat scans and the cost that goes with them.
- Specialist diagnostic workup
Procedure-specific tests — biopsy, cardiac catheterisation, endoscopy, or genetic / molecular profiling depending on the suspected diagnosis. Done at the centre that will treat, ideally, so results integrate cleanly into the treatment plan.
- Multidisciplinary review (where indicated)
Cancer, complex cardiac, transplant, and rare-disease cases should be reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel — surgical, medical, imaging, and pathology — before any treatment commits. Single-discipline plans for complex disease are a quality red flag.
When to escalate to specialist review
- New, persistent, or worsening symptoms beyond the usual pattern — particularly anything that disrupts work, sleep, or daily function for >2 weeks.
- Symptoms accompanied by red-flag features (unintentional weight loss, night sweats, bleeding, severe pain, neurological signs).
- Any "this feels different" instinct — especially with recurrent or chronic conditions where you know your baseline well.
- A second-opinion misalignment with your current care plan — when two qualified clinicians disagree, the case warrants a third review before committing.
Before you book international travel
- Confirm your specific diagnosis is fully worked up before you commit to a treatment plan abroad. Travelling for the workup is fine; travelling for treatment without the workup done is not.
- Get your case reviewed remotely by the destination centre's team before you book flights — credible international patient programs review imaging + reports before they confirm the surgical plan.
- Bring a digital + physical copy of your full medical record: imaging on USB drive in DICOM format, labs in PDF, current medication list with dosages, allergies, and any prior surgical reports.
- Plan for the post-op rehabilitation phase before you fly — the surgery itself is rarely the bottleneck.
- Confirm that follow-up imaging and any necessary in-person reviews can be done at home — a treatment plan that requires repeat international trips is more burdensome (and more expensive) than the headline procedure.
