Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Impacted wisdom teeth are third molars that cannot fully emerge through the gum because of lack of space or an awkward angle. They are common in young adults.

À propos de impacted wisdom teeth

Ce qu'il faut savoir

Many impacted teeth cause no trouble. Others lead to pain, swelling around the gum, bad taste, difficulty opening the mouth, decay in the neighbouring molar or repeated infection called pericoronitis. A dentist diagnoses the problem by examination and an X-ray such as a panoramic view, which shows the tooth position and its relation to nerves. Symptoms often flare up and settle repeatedly.

Teeth without symptoms are often simply monitored. Short episodes of infection are treated with cleaning, antiseptic rinses and sometimes antibiotics. Removal is advised for recurrent infection, decay or damage to neighbouring teeth. A simple extraction suffices for partly erupted teeth; surgical extraction is needed when the tooth lies under bone or gum. It is usually done under local anaesthetic, sometimes with sedation.

Bilan avant le départ

Examens à déjà réalisés

  • A panoramic dental X-ray (OPG), or a cone-beam CT scan, showing tooth position and its closeness to the nerve in the lower jaw.
  • Notes on symptoms, including pain, swelling, bad taste or episodes of gum infection (pericoronitis) and any antibiotics used.
  • A list of medicines, especially blood thinners, bisphosphonates or steroids, and any allergies to antibiotics or anaesthetic.
  • Details of any decay or bone loss on the neighbouring second molar, which can change the urgency of removal.
  • Medical history for conditions such as heart valve disease, diabetes or bleeding disorders that affect planning for sedation or surgery.

Deuxième avis

Quand obtenir un second regard

  • Removal is advised for a tooth that causes no symptoms and shows no disease on X-ray.
  • The X-ray shows the root very close to the nerve and you have not been told about the risk of numbness.
  • You have repeated gum infections but have been given only antibiotics each time, without a plan for the tooth.
  • All four teeth are to be removed together under general anaesthetic and you want to confirm that every one is necessary.

Questions à poser

  1. Is this tooth causing disease or damaging the next tooth, or can it be safely monitored?
  2. How close is it to the nerve, and what is the chance of temporary or lasting numbness?
  3. What type of anaesthesia is proposed, and does it suit my health and anxiety level?
  4. What recovery should I expect, and how long should I stay near the surgeon before flying home?
  5. What are the signs of dry socket or infection, and who do I contact after I leave?
  6. What happens if I leave the tooth in place, and how often should it be checked?

Perspectives

Pronostic réaliste

Removal of impacted wisdom teeth is a routine procedure, and most people recover within one to two weeks with swelling and discomfort peaking around day two to three. Risks such as dry socket, infection and temporary lip or tongue numbness are uncommon and depend on tooth depth, nerve closeness and age. Younger patients generally heal faster, and teeth without disease can sometimes be left under observation.

Bilan diagnostique

04 · FAQ

Questions fréquentes sur impacted wisdom teeth

Do all impacted wisdom teeth need to come out?

No. Teeth that cause no symptoms or disease can often be monitored. Removal is usually advised for repeated infection, decay, cysts or damage to the neighbouring tooth.

Will I have numbness after the operation?

Temporary numbness of the lip or tongue happens in a small number of people, and permanent numbness is rare. Risk is higher when the root lies very close to the nerve, which your scan will show.

When can I fly after removal?

Many people travel within a few days if healing is uncomfortable but uncomplicated, but your surgeon should confirm. Avoid flying with significant swelling, bleeding or infection.

Clinical context

Working up impacted wisdom teeth properly

A condition like impacted wisdom teeth is rarely well-served by jumping straight to treatment shopping. The sequence below is what a dentaire specialist would expect to see completed — and the absence of any step is the right cue to delay travel decisions.

Diagnostic workup, in sequence

  1. First-line clinical assessment

History, physical exam, and risk-factor review by a senior generalist or dentaire specialist. Symptoms list, family history, prior workup notes, and current medication list should travel with the patient.

  2. Standard imaging + labs

Baseline blood work, condition-specific imaging (ultrasound / X-ray / MRI / CT — depending on indication), and ECG / pulmonary function as relevant. Bring digital copies of any prior imaging — saves repeat scans and the cost that goes with them.

  3. Specialist diagnostic workup

Procedure-specific tests — biopsy, cardiac catheterisation, endoscopy, or genetic / molecular profiling depending on the suspected diagnosis. Done at the centre that will treat, ideally, so results integrate cleanly into the treatment plan.

  4. Multidisciplinary review (where indicated)

Cancer, complex cardiac, transplant, and rare-disease cases should be reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel — surgical, medical, imaging, and pathology — before any treatment commits. Single-discipline plans for complex disease are a quality red flag.

When to escalate to specialist review

  • New, persistent, or worsening symptoms beyond the usual pattern — particularly anything that disrupts work, sleep, or daily function for >2 weeks.
  • Symptoms accompanied by red-flag features (unintentional weight loss, night sweats, bleeding, severe pain, neurological signs).
  • Any "this feels different" instinct — especially with recurrent or chronic conditions where you know your baseline well.
  • A second-opinion misalignment with your current care plan — when two qualified clinicians disagree, the case warrants a third review before committing.

Before you book international travel

  • Confirm your specific diagnosis is fully worked up before you commit to a treatment plan abroad. Travelling for the workup is fine; travelling for treatment without the workup done is not.
  • Get your case reviewed remotely by the destination centre's team before you book flights — credible international patient programs review imaging + reports before they confirm the surgical plan.
  • Bring a digital + physical copy of your full medical record: imaging on USB drive in DICOM format, labs in PDF, current medication list with dosages, allergies, and any prior surgical reports.
  • Plan for the post-op rehabilitation phase before you fly — the surgery itself is rarely the bottleneck.
  • Confirm that follow-up imaging and any necessary in-person reviews can be done at home — a treatment plan that requires repeat international trips is more burdensome (and more expensive) than the headline procedure.
