Edentulous Upper Jaw

An edentulous upper jaw means all the upper teeth are missing. Upper dentures usually stay in place better than lower ones, but they cover the palate and the bone beneath is often soft and thin.

À propos de edentulous upper jaw

Ce qu'il faut savoir

Common problems are a bulky denture, reduced taste, gagging, slipping when eating and speech changes. A dentist uses X-rays and cone-beam CT to measure bone volume and the position of the sinuses. After tooth loss the upper bone shrinks upwards and backwards, and the sinuses can enlarge into the space.

A well-fitting conventional upper denture is the starting point. Fixed implant teeth with All-on-4 or All-on-6 remove the need for a palate plate. If bone is too thin, options are bone grafting, sinus lift or zygomatic implants anchored in the cheekbone. Upper implant work often involves staged healing, so patients travelling abroad should plan time for review.

Bilan avant le départ

Examens à déjà réalisés

  • CBCT scan of the upper jaw showing bone volume under the sinuses and the condition of the sinus lining.
  • Panoramic X-ray and photographs, plus your existing upper denture and a note of how it fits.
  • ENT history: chronic sinusitis, previous sinus surgery or nasal allergies, which affect sinus-related treatment.
  • Medical history including smoking, diabetes, osteoporosis medicines and any radiotherapy to the head and neck.
  • Records of previous grafting, sinus lifts, or failed implants, with dates.

Deuxième avis

Quand obtenir un second regard

  • You are told grafting is essential and want to know whether zygomatic or angled implants could avoid it.
  • You have chronic sinus disease and have not had it assessed before implant planning.
  • Previous upper implants have failed and the cause has not been established.
  • You are offered zygomatic implants and want to know how experienced the surgeon is in that technique.

Questions à poser

  1. What bone height do I have under the sinuses, and will a sinus lift or graft be needed?
  2. Would All-on-4, All-on-6 or zygomatic implants suit me best?
  3. What are the risks to my sinuses, such as infection or an opening between the mouth and sinus?
  4. Can fixed teeth be fitted on the day of surgery?
  5. How do I keep the area clean, and what monitoring of the sinus is needed afterwards?
  6. What happens if one implant fails?

Perspectives

Pronostic réaliste

Upper jaw implants have somewhat lower success than lower jaw implants because the bone is softer, but good results are still usual. Grafting adds healing time, while zygomatic implants can allow fixed teeth when bone is very limited but require an experienced surgeon. Outcome depends on bone, sinus health, smoking, diabetes and cleaning. Sinus complications are uncommon but need prompt treatment.

Bilan diagnostique

04 · FAQ

Questions fréquentes sur edentulous upper jaw

Why is the upper jaw harder for implants?

The bone is softer and often thin because the sinuses sit just above. Grafting, sinus lifts or angled implants may be needed.

What are zygomatic implants?

They are long implants anchored in the cheekbone, used when upper jaw bone is too thin for standard implants. They need an experienced surgeon.

Can I get fixed teeth without bone grafting?

Sometimes, using angled or zygomatic implants, but it depends on your scan. A CBCT assessment tells you which route is realistic.

Clinical context

Working up edentulous upper jaw properly

A condition like edentulous upper jaw is rarely well-served by jumping straight to treatment shopping. The sequence below is what a dentaire specialist would expect to see completed — and the absence of any step is the right cue to delay travel decisions.

Diagnostic workup, in sequence

  1. First-line clinical assessment

History, physical exam, and risk-factor review by a senior generalist or dentaire specialist. Symptoms list, family history, prior workup notes, and current medication list should travel with the patient.

  2. Standard imaging + labs

Baseline blood work, condition-specific imaging (ultrasound / X-ray / MRI / CT — depending on indication), and ECG / pulmonary function as relevant. Bring digital copies of any prior imaging — saves repeat scans and the cost that goes with them.

  3. Specialist diagnostic workup

Procedure-specific tests — biopsy, cardiac catheterisation, endoscopy, or genetic / molecular profiling depending on the suspected diagnosis. Done at the centre that will treat, ideally, so results integrate cleanly into the treatment plan.

  4. Multidisciplinary review (where indicated)

Cancer, complex cardiac, transplant, and rare-disease cases should be reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel — surgical, medical, imaging, and pathology — before any treatment commits. Single-discipline plans for complex disease are a quality red flag.

When to escalate to specialist review

  • New, persistent, or worsening symptoms beyond the usual pattern — particularly anything that disrupts work, sleep, or daily function for >2 weeks.
  • Symptoms accompanied by red-flag features (unintentional weight loss, night sweats, bleeding, severe pain, neurological signs).
  • Any "this feels different" instinct — especially with recurrent or chronic conditions where you know your baseline well.
  • A second-opinion misalignment with your current care plan — when two qualified clinicians disagree, the case warrants a third review before committing.

Before you book international travel

  • Confirm your specific diagnosis is fully worked up before you commit to a treatment plan abroad. Travelling for the workup is fine; travelling for treatment without the workup done is not.
  • Get your case reviewed remotely by the destination centre's team before you book flights — credible international patient programs review imaging + reports before they confirm the surgical plan.
  • Bring a digital + physical copy of your full medical record: imaging on USB drive in DICOM format, labs in PDF, current medication list with dosages, allergies, and any prior surgical reports.
  • Plan for the post-op rehabilitation phase before you fly — the surgery itself is rarely the bottleneck.
  • Confirm that follow-up imaging and any necessary in-person reviews can be done at home — a treatment plan that requires repeat international trips is more burdensome (and more expensive) than the headline procedure.
