About Vitrectomy (Pars Plana)
Vitrectomy is done under local anaesthesia with sedation, or general anaesthesia for some patients. The surgeon places three small ports through the pars plana, the safe zone in the white of the eye, then removes the gel and works on the retina with fine instruments, laser or membrane peeling. The eye may be filled with gas or silicone oil.
Results depend mainly on the condition being treated rather than on the vitrectomy itself. Clearing a bleed can restore vision quickly, while macular and retinal problems recover more slowly and sometimes only partly. Cataract tends to develop sooner after the operation, and a gas bubble or oil temporarily blurs sight.
Plan to stay at least a week for early checks. If a gas bubble is used, flying and high altitude are not allowed until it has gone, which can take weeks. Bring your eye records, OCT scans and medicine list, and arrange retinal follow-up at home, especially if you have diabetes.
Usually a good fit if
- Non-clearing vitreous haemorrhage.
- Retinal detachment, macular hole or epiretinal membrane needing repair.
- Complications of proliferative diabetic retinopathy.
- Retained lens fragments or infection inside the eye.
May need to wait if
- Active uncontrolled systemic illness making anaesthesia unsafe.
- Inability to keep the required head position or avoid flying.
- Little visual potential due to severe optic nerve or macular disease.
- Active external eye infection.
How to prepare
- Bring retinal scans, OCT and your eye history, plus diabetes and blood pressure records.
- Ask whether gas or silicone oil will be used and about flying and altitude restrictions.
- Review blood thinners and diabetes control with your doctor; do not change medicines yourself.
- Arrange a carer and a stay near the hospital for early checks.
- Discuss whether cataract surgery will be combined.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Why is vitrectomy needed for my condition, and what is the goal?
- Will gas or silicone oil be used, and for how long?
- What is the chance that I will need another operation?
- Will a cataract develop afterwards?
- When can I fly and return to normal activity?
- Who can monitor my retina at home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- No retinal imaging or ultrasound before surgery.
- No discussion of gas, oil or flying restrictions.
- Promising full vision recovery regardless of the condition.
- No follow-up plan or surgeon contact.
Questions about Vitrectomy (Pars Plana) abroad
Which country is cheapest for Vitrectomy (Pars Plana)?
The lowest typical hospital prices are in India ($5,555), Thailand ($6,523), Turkey ($7,265), out of 9 countries we compare.
How long will I stay in hospital for Vitrectomy (Pars Plana)?
Most patients spend about 1 nights in hospital. Full recovery takes about 14 days; your surgeon will tell you when you are fit to fly home.
Is vitrectomy painful?
The eye is numbed, so you feel little. Aching and redness for a few days are usual.
Why can I not fly after surgery?
Gas expands at altitude and can dangerously raise eye pressure. Wait until the surgeon confirms it has gone.
Will I need cataract surgery later?
Often yes, since vitrectomy hastens cataract formation in people with their own lens.
Will my vision be restored?
It depends on the underlying disease. Surgery aims to repair or preserve the retina.
