About UroLift
Through a cystoscope, the doctor places a small number of tiny implants that pull the obstructing prostate lobes sideways, creating a wider channel for urine. It is done with local anaesthetic and sedation, usually in under an hour, and many men go home without a catheter. It suits small to medium prostates without a prominent middle lobe.
Many men notice a better stream within a few weeks and avoid the sexual side effects of surgery, as ejaculation is generally preserved. Outcomes depend on prostate size and shape, the number of implants needed and symptom severity. Benefits may be less than those after tissue-removing surgery, and a minority need further treatment later. Mild burning and blood in the urine settle in days.
This is a day case, and most men resume light activity the next day. Plan to stay a night or two nearby in case of difficulty passing urine. Bring your prostate size, PSA and flow results, and keep your device card, so that any doctor you see later, including before an MRI scan, knows about the implants.
Usually a good fit if
- Bothersome urinary symptoms from BPH, with a prostate generally under about 80 mL.
- Men who want to preserve ejaculation and erections.
- Men who want to avoid long-term medicines and larger surgery.
- A prostate without a prominent middle lobe, or with a middle lobe the surgeon can treat.
May need to wait if
- Suspected prostate cancer needs investigation before treatment.
- Active urinary infection must be treated first.
- Very large prostates are generally better suited to HoLEP or TURP.
- Known metal or nickel allergy needs discussion.
How to prepare
- Bring prostate size (ultrasound or MRI), PSA, flow test and urine culture so suitability is confirmed.
- Treat any urinary infection first and tell your doctor about blood thinners; changes only on the doctor's instruction.
- Confirm you have no known nickel allergy, as the implant contains metal.
- Follow fasting instructions if sedation is planned and arrange a lift home.
- Discuss whether you may need a catheter for a short time.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Is my prostate shape and size suitable for UroLift?
- How many implants will I need, and how many UroLift procedures have you done?
- What is the chance of needing further treatment later?
- Will I have a catheter, and for how long?
- How will UroLift affect ejaculation and erections compared with TURP?
- If I need MRI later, are the implants a problem?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- Promises that UroLift suits every prostate, or that it never needs retreatment.
- No work-up for prostate cancer or infection.
- No discussion of alternatives for larger prostates.
- No follow-up plan for flow tests and symptom scores.
