About Upper Blepharoplasty
A fine incision is made in the natural eyelid crease, excess skin and a thin strip of muscle are removed, and fat is trimmed or repositioned if needed. It is performed under local anaesthesia, sometimes with sedation, and takes about an hour. A brow lift may be added if low brows contribute to the heaviness.
Eyes look more open and rested once bruising fades, and the scar in the crease is usually very discreet. Results depend on skin quality, brow position and the amount of skin is removed. If the lid itself droops because of a weak muscle, a different operation is needed, and an assessment will tell the two apart.
Sutures are removed after about a week, and most people look presentable within ten days to two weeks. Plan to stay near the clinic until the stitches are out. Bring lubricating drops, cold compresses and sunglasses, and avoid contact lenses and makeup until your surgeon allows.
Usually a good fit if
- You have excess upper-lid skin that makes you look tired or blocks part of your vision.
- Your brow position is reasonable and you have no active eye disease.
- You are in good general health.
- You have realistic expectations.
May need to wait if
- Dry eye that is severe or uncontrolled.
- A drooping brow or true ptosis (weak lid muscle), which needs a different treatment.
- Thyroid eye disease that is active.
- Uncontrolled blood pressure or bleeding disorders.
How to prepare
- Have an eye check, and tell your surgeon about dry eyes, thyroid problems, glaucoma and previous eye surgery.
- Review blood thinners, aspirin, fish oil and supplements with your doctor.
- Stop smoking as advised and avoid alcohol before surgery.
- Bring sunglasses, lubricating eye drops and cold packs, and arrange a companion.
- Ask about fitness to fly and plan to stay near the clinic until the stitches are removed.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Is my problem excess skin, a low brow or ptosis, and does it change the operation?
- What amount of skin and fat will you remove?
- Where will the scar sit?
- How do you manage dry eyes or incomplete lid closure?
- When are stitches removed and when can I wear make-up and lenses?
- Whom can I contact at home if my vision changes?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- No eye assessment or visual field testing when vision is affected.
- Removing too much skin in all patients.
- No discussion of dry eyes or lid closure.
- No emergency contact for pain or vision changes.
