About Surgical Tooth Extraction
After local anaesthesia, sometimes with sedation, the dentist or oral surgeon makes a small cut in the gum and may remove a little bone around the tooth. The tooth is often divided into pieces so that it can come out gently. The socket is cleaned and the gum is closed with stitches, dissolvable in many cases. X-rays or a 3D scan are used beforehand to plan the approach.
Healing is usually straightforward. Swelling, tenderness and minor bleeding are normal for the first few days, and the socket fills with new tissue over weeks. The main complication to watch for is dry socket, which causes worsening pain after a few days. Smoking, poor hygiene, difficult root shape and certain medicines raise the risk, and the surgeon's experience influences how smooth recovery feels.
Most people can fly home within a few days, but check with the surgeon before a long journey, and keep any stitch removal date in mind. Bring a list of your medicines, especially blood thinners, and arrange soft foods, pain relief as advised and cold packs. If a replacement is planned, such as an implant or bridge, ask what timing is advised.
Usually a good fit if
- A tooth that is broken below the gum line, severely decayed or cannot be restored.
- An impacted or ankylosed tooth, or one with curved roots that needs sectioning.
- Infection or crowding where removal is advised by the dentist or orthodontist.
- Stable health, or conditions managed before the procedure.
May need to wait if
- Uncontrolled bleeding disorders or blood thinners that have not been reviewed by your doctor.
- Recent head and neck radiotherapy, or bisphosphonate use, which needs specialist planning.
- Active severe infection with spreading swelling or fever, which may need treatment first.
- A tooth that can be saved with root canal treatment or restoration.
How to prepare
- Have an X-ray or 3D scan so the surgeon can plan around roots, nerves and sinuses.
- Tell the surgeon about blood thinners, bisphosphonates, diabetes or heart conditions; any medicine change must be on your doctor's instruction.
- Eat normally before local anaesthesia, but follow fasting instructions if sedation is planned.
- Arrange soft food, cold packs and a companion, and ask whether you can fly the next day.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Why can this tooth not be saved, and are there alternatives?
- Is this a simple or surgical extraction, and will it need stitches or sectioning?
- Is there a risk to nearby nerves or sinus, based on my scan?
- Do I need a bone graft or replacement implant, and when can it be done?
- What should I do at home if there is bleeding or a dry socket?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- Extraction is recommended without an X-ray or scan.
- Medical history and medicines are not asked about.
- The clinic cannot explain risks such as nerve injury or sinus involvement.
- There is no written aftercare plan or emergency contact.
Questions about Surgical Tooth Extraction abroad
Which country is cheapest for Surgical Tooth Extraction?
The lowest typical hospital prices are in India ($240), Thailand ($293), Turkey ($333), out of 9 countries we compare.
What is a dry socket?
It happens when the blood clot is lost from the socket, causing a throbbing pain a few days later. Avoid smoking, spitting and straws, and contact your dentist if pain increases after day three.
Will I be able to eat normally?
You will eat soft, cool foods at first and chew on the other side. Most people return to a normal diet within a week or two.
Can I have an implant straight away?
Sometimes, but it depends on infection, bone volume and the tooth involved. Your surgeon will advise whether to wait for healing or add a bone graft.
