About Root Canal Treatment
Under local anaesthesia, the dentist opens the tooth, removes the pulp, cleans and shapes the canals with fine files and disinfecting solution, and fills them with a sealing material. Magnification and electronic length measurement improve accuracy. The tooth is then restored with a filling or, more often, a crown.
The treatment relieves pain and saves the tooth in most cases. Outcomes depend on how far the infection has spread, how many canals the tooth has, the quality of cleaning and sealing, and the final restoration. A cracked or poorly restored tooth is more likely to fail and may need extraction.
One or two visits are usual, and a crown may need a further visit within a week or two. Plan three to seven days if a crown is needed. Take pain relief and antibiotics only as directed, avoid chewing on the tooth until restored, and keep copies of the X-rays for your own dentist.
Usually a good fit if
- You have a deep cavity, an abscess or persistent pain involving the nerve.
- The tooth can be restored and has enough root and bone support.
- You want to keep your natural tooth.
- The tooth is not cracked down the root.
May need to wait if
- A vertical root fracture, which usually means extraction.
- A tooth that cannot be restored or has severe gum disease.
- Uncontrolled diabetes or immune problems, which need careful management.
- Inability to complete the crown afterwards.
How to prepare
- Bring any recent X-rays and tell your dentist about allergies, medicines and heart valve conditions.
- Take antibiotics or painkillers exactly as prescribed, and do not stop any other medicine without your doctor's instruction.
- Eat a normal meal before the visit and avoid alcohol.
- Plan soft foods and avoid biting on the tooth until it is restored.
- Ask about the crown so you can plan the visit schedule.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Will the tooth need a crown afterwards, and when should it be placed?
- Do you use a rubber dam and a microscope?
- How many visits will it need?
- What is the chance it will need retreatment?
- What pain should I expect and what is unusual?
- Who can place the crown at home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- No X-ray before treatment.
- No rubber dam isolation.
- No discussion of restoring the tooth after the root canal.
- No advice on what to do if pain or swelling persists.
