About Porcelain Veneers
The dentist removes a thin layer of enamel, takes a scan or impression, and a laboratory makes the veneers, usually from feldspathic porcelain or lithium disilicate. Temporary veneers are worn meanwhile, and a mock-up lets you preview the look. The final shells are bonded with adhesive cement and the bite adjusted.
Veneers look natural and resist staining, and they often last 10 to 15 years with care. Results depend on the dentist's design, the laboratory work, the amount of enamel remains for bonding and habits such as grinding or biting hard objects. Because enamel is removed, the change is not reversible.
Plan about a week to ten days away, with preparation first and fitting a few days later. Bring photographs of the smile you like and your dental records. Avoid very hard foods and wear a night guard if advised, and arrange a local dentist for follow-up checks.
Usually a good fit if
- You have discoloured, chipped, worn or slightly misaligned teeth.
- Your gums are healthy and your teeth have enough enamel for bonding.
- You want a durable cosmetic result.
- You accept the irreversible tooth preparation.
May need to wait if
- Heavy grinding or clenching without a night guard.
- Active decay or gum disease.
- Crowded teeth that should be aligned with orthodontics first.
- Very little enamel, such as from severe erosion.
How to prepare
- Have a dental check-up, treat decay and gum disease and complete any whitening before shade selection.
- Bring photos of the smile you want and expect a digital design or wax mock-up.
- Tell your dentist about teeth grinding so a night guard can be made.
- Understand that enamel removal is permanent and ask what amount will be removed.
- Plan two visits about one to two weeks apart.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- What amount of enamel will you remove, and could no-prep veneers work for me?
- May I see a mock-up before treatment?
- Which porcelain and laboratory do you use?
- How long will they last, and what does the warranty cover?
- Do I need a night guard?
- Who can repair a chipped veneer at home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- No mock-up or discussion of your smile design.
- Aggressive preparation of all teeth in every patient.
- No grinding or bite assessment.
- Unspecified material or laboratory.
