Robotic Partial Nephrectomy cost abroad (2026)
Robotic partial nephrectomy removes a kidney tumour and leaves the healthy part of the kidney in place. Small keyhole incisions and robotic instruments are used to protect long-term kidney function.

About Robotic Partial Nephrectomy
Under general anaesthesia, the surgeon sits at a console and controls instruments through several small cuts. The tumour is located, often with an ultrasound probe, the blood supply is briefly clamped in many cases, and the tumour is cut out with a rim of healthy tissue. The kidney is then repaired with sutures. It is suited to small and medium tumours, based on their size and position.
The goal is to remove the cancer completely and keep as much kidney function as possible. Outcomes depend on tumour size, depth and position, the surgeon's experience, and the health of your kidneys beforehand. Complications include bleeding, urine leakage and, occasionally, the need to convert to open surgery or remove the whole kidney. Scans over the following years check for recurrence.
Hospital stay is usually around three to four days, and you may fly home when you are mobile and the wound is healing, commonly after a week or more. Avoid heavy lifting for about six weeks. Bring your CT or MRI scans and kidney function results, and arrange regular follow-up scans and blood tests with a urologist at home.
Usually a good fit if
- A small to moderate kidney tumour (often under about 4 to 7 cm) in a suitable position.
- Only one working kidney, or reduced kidney function, where saving kidney tissue is important.
- Both kidneys involved or a family tumour syndrome, where sparing kidney is key.
- Fit for general anaesthesia and keyhole surgery.
May need to wait if
- Tumours deeply embedded or involving major vessels may require a different approach or a full nephrectomy.
- Uncontrolled heart, lung or bleeding problems need optimisation first.
- Widespread cancer spread may change the plan.
- Active infection should be treated before surgery.
How to prepare
- Bring CT or MRI scans, kidney function tests and any biopsy results so the surgeon can plan the resection.
- Expect blood tests, clotting studies, heart and lung assessment and an anaesthetic review.
- Review blood pressure, diabetes and blood thinners with your doctor; changes only on the doctor's instruction.
- Stop smoking if you smoke, and follow fasting instructions.
- Plan a hospital stay of a few days and reduced lifting for several weeks.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Is my tumour suitable for partial nephrectomy, and what is the chance of converting to full removal?
- How many robotic partial nephrectomies have you done, and what are your positive margin and complication rates?
- Will you clamp the kidney artery, and how do you protect kidney function?
- What are the risks, such as bleeding or urine leak?
- What does the pathology report mean, and what surveillance follows?
- Who can run scans and kidney tests at home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- Whole kidney removal recommended for a small tumour without explaining why it cannot be spared.
- No kidney function test or clear imaging plan.
- Surgeon cannot describe their robotic partial nephrectomy numbers.
- No surveillance plan after cancer surgery.
Questions about Robotic Partial Nephrectomy abroad
How long will I stay in hospital for Robotic Partial Nephrectomy?
Most patients spend about 4 nights in hospital. Full recovery takes about 42 days; your surgeon will tell you when you are fit to fly home.
Why keep part of the kidney?
Keeping healthy kidney tissue protects long-term kidney function and lowers heart and kidney risks compared with removing the whole kidney, when the tumour is suitable.
Does the cancer always come out completely?
The aim is a clear rim of healthy tissue. The pathology report confirms whether margins are clear, and your surgeon will discuss any concerns.
What are the main risks?
Bleeding, urine leak from the repair, infection and some loss of kidney function. Experienced surgeons lower these risks.
Is robotic surgery better than open?
It offers less pain and quicker recovery for many tumours. Results depend heavily on surgeon experience.
