About Epiretinal Membrane Peel
The operation is a vitrectomy done under local anaesthesia with sedation. The surgeon makes three tiny openings in the white of the eye, removes the vitreous gel, then uses fine forceps to lift and peel the membrane from the retina. The inner limiting membrane may be peeled as well, and a gas bubble is sometimes used at the end.
Surgery usually reduces distortion and improves central vision gradually over several months, but it does not always return it to normal. Results depend on how long the membrane has been present, how healthy the retina underneath is and any other eye disease. A cataract tends to form faster after a vitrectomy, especially in older patients.
Plan to stay a day for the operation and check, then nearby for about a week to ten days for early reviews. If a gas bubble is used, you cannot fly or go to high altitude until it has gone. Bring OCT scans and eye records, and arrange a follow-up with a retinal specialist at home.
Usually a good fit if
- Epiretinal membrane with distorted or reduced central vision that affects reading or driving.
- Visible membrane traction on OCT.
- Symptoms worsening over time.
- Healthy enough for local anaesthesia.
May need to wait if
- Mild symptoms with good vision, where watching is reasonable.
- Severe retinal or optic nerve disease limiting the possible gain.
- Active eye infection.
- Inability to avoid flying or altitude after a gas bubble.
How to prepare
- Bring OCT scans and your vision records so the surgeon can confirm the membrane and its effect.
- Ask whether gas will be used and how long air travel and altitude must be avoided.
- Review blood thinners and diabetes control with your doctor; do not change medicines yourself.
- If you have not had cataract surgery, ask whether it will be combined.
- Arrange a carer and stay close for early reviews.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Is surgery recommended now or can we wait?
- Will you use gas or air, and what positioning is needed?
- Will the inner limiting membrane be peeled too?
- Will my cataract progress, and should it be combined?
- What improvement should I realistically expect in the distortion?
- How is follow-up arranged at home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- No OCT before advising surgery.
- Operating on mild symptoms without discussing waiting.
- Not warning about gas and flying restrictions.
- No plan to monitor pressure and the retina after surgery.

The lowest typical hospital prices are in India ($5,548), Thailand ($6,423), Turkey ($7,445), out of 9 countries we compare.
How long will I stay in hospital for Epiretinal Membrane Peel?
Most patients spend about 1 nights in hospital. Full recovery takes about 14 days; your surgeon will tell you when you are fit to fly home.
Will the distortion go away completely?
It usually improves but may not vanish completely. Recovery can continue for up to a year.
Will I need cataract surgery later?
Vitrectomy often speeds cataract formation in people who still have their own lens.

Can the membrane grow back?
Rarely, it can. Peeling the inner membrane lowers this risk.
