About Vesicoureteric Reflux Surgery

Vesicoureteric reflux (VUR) surgery corrects the faulty valve between ureter and bladder, so urine stops flowing back to the kidney and causing repeated infection and scarring.

Treatment is considered when reflux is high-grade or infections continue despite low-dose antibiotics. Options include injecting a bulking agent at the ureter opening through a cystoscope, or ureteric reimplantation, where the ureter is re-tunnelled into the bladder wall. Reimplantation can be open, laparoscopic or robotic. Both are performed under general anaesthesia.

Usually a good fit if

  • Reflux that causes recurrent infections despite preventive antibiotics.
  • Higher-grade reflux with kidney scarring or declining function.
  • Reflux that persists in older children or adults.
  • A person fit for general anaesthesia.

May need to wait if

  • Active urinary infection must be treated first.
  • Low-grade reflux with no infections may be safely monitored.
  • Poor bladder emptying or constipation should be treated, as they undermine results.
  • Uncontrolled medical conditions need optimisation.
How to prepare
  1. Bring your ultrasound, MCUG (cystogram), DMSA scan and urine culture reports showing reflux grade and any kidney scarring.
  2. Treat any urine infection first; your doctor may continue preventive antibiotics until surgery.
  3. Tell your doctor about all medicines; changes only on the doctor's instruction.
  4. Follow fasting instructions and arrange help for the first days after discharge.
  5. Plan follow-up scans before and after travel.
Questions to ask your surgeon
  1. Do I need surgery, or can reflux be monitored with antibiotics?
  2. Do you recommend endoscopic injection or reimplantation, and what are the pros and cons?
  3. How many reflux operations do you perform each year, and what is your success rate?
  4. Will I need a catheter or stent, and for how long?
  5. How will you confirm the reflux is gone?
  6. Who can arrange follow-up tests at home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
  • Surgery proposed without a cystogram showing reflux or clear indication.
  • No discussion of alternatives such as injection or antibiotics.
  • Surgeon rarely performs reflux surgery or reimplantation.
  • No follow-up scan or urine monitoring plan.

How much does Vesicoureteric Reflux Surgery cost in Germany in 2026?

Prices start from $20,700, based on 8 hospital prices in Germany in our database. Your final price depends on the hospital, room type and implant; we send written quotes that list what is included.

Is Vesicoureteric Reflux Surgery cheaper in Germany than in other countries?

Germany ranks 9 of 9 destinations we compare for this procedure. The lowest typical price is in India at about $8,283.

How long do I need to stay in Germany?

Most patients spend about 3 nights in hospital. Full recovery takes about 28 days; your surgeon will tell you when you are fit to fly home.

How long does a medical visa for Germany take?

Schengen Medical Treatment Visa (Type C or D): processing takes about 10 days and the visa is valid for 90 days. We help with the hospital invitation letter.

Is surgery the only option?

No. Low-grade reflux may be watched or treated with preventive antibiotics, and endoscopic injection is another option. Your specialist will explain the choice.

Which technique is most effective?

Reimplantation has the highest success rate, especially for high grades, while injection is quicker with a faster recovery but may need repeating.

Will infections stop?

Surgery lowers the risk of kidney infection from reflux, but bladder habits can still cause infections.

What are the risks?

Urine leak, narrowing, persistent reflux, infection and bladder spasms. Experienced surgeons lower these risks.
