About Vertebroplasty

Vertebroplasty injects bone cement into a broken vertebra to stabilise it and ease pain. It is for people with a recent osteoporotic or tumour-related compression fracture whose pain has not settled with standard care.

Under local anaesthetic with sedation, and with X-ray guidance, the radiologist or surgeon passes a thin needle through the skin into the fractured vertebra and injects medical cement that hardens within minutes. The procedure usually takes under an hour. A related procedure, kyphoplasty, first inflates a balloon to create a space before the cement is placed.

Usually a good fit if

  • A painful compression fracture in the spine from osteoporosis or a spinal tumour.
  • A recent fracture with oedema on MRI that matches the location of pain.
  • Pain that has not improved after a few weeks of rest, bracing and pain medicines.
  • Severe pain that limits movement and sleep.

May need to wait if

  • Infection in the body or near the injection site.
  • Bleeding disorders that cannot be corrected.
  • Fracture fragments pressing on the spinal cord or nerves, which usually need surgery.
  • Healed, old fractures or a pain source elsewhere.
How to prepare
  1. Bring your MRI, CT or bone scan showing the fracture is recent or active; the fracture needs to match your pain.
  2. Ask your doctor about blood thinners and aspirin to review, since clotting must be normal.
  3. Complete blood tests, including clotting and infection markers.
  4. Tell the team about allergies to contrast dye or antibiotics.
  5. Ask about osteoporosis treatment, which usually follows to prevent new fractures.
Questions to ask your surgeon
  1. Does the fracture on my scan match my pain, and is it recent enough for treatment?
  2. Are you using vertebroplasty or balloon kyphoplasty, and why?
  3. What are the risks of cement leakage and new fractures at adjacent levels?
  4. Will the procedure be done under local anaesthesia and sedation?
  5. How will you treat my osteoporosis afterwards?
  6. What follow-up can I have back home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
  • Procedure offered without MRI or bone scan to confirm an active fracture.
  • Not performed under X-ray imaging.
  • No osteoporosis assessment or treatment plan.
  • No spinal surgery back-up if complications occur.

Questions about Vertebroplasty in Turkey

How much does Vertebroplasty cost in Turkey in 2026?

Prices start from $5,050, based on 8 hospital prices in Turkey in our database. Your final price depends on the hospital, room type and implant; we send written quotes that list what is included.

Is Vertebroplasty cheaper in Turkey than in other countries?

Turkey ranks 3 of 9 destinations we compare for this procedure. The lowest typical price is in India at about $5,685.

How long do I need to stay in Turkey?

Most patients spend about 1 nights in hospital. Full recovery takes about 14 days; your surgeon will tell you when you are fit to fly home.

How long does a medical visa for Turkey take?

e-Visa or Medical Visa (USHAŞ-facilitated): processing takes about 3 days and the visa is valid for 90 days. We help with the hospital invitation letter.

How soon does the pain go away?

Many people feel much better within one to two days, though this varies. Pain relief is most reliable when the fracture is recent and shows swelling on MRI.

Can cement leak?

Small leaks are fairly common and often cause no symptoms. Rarely they can press on nerves or the lungs. X-ray guidance and careful injection reduce the risk.

Will I get new fractures?

People with osteoporosis can develop new spine fractures, including near the treated bone. Treating osteoporosis lowers this risk.

Is bone cement permanent?

Yes, the cement remains in the vertebra permanently and does not need to be replaced.
