About TomoTherapy
TomoTherapy is a form of intensity-modulated radiotherapy that combines a CT scanner with a rotating radiation beam. It treats cancers that need precisely shaped doses, including large or irregular areas close to sensitive organs.
The machine delivers radiation in a spiral as the couch moves through the ring, using many narrow beams of varying strength. Treatment starts with a planning CT scan, often with a custom mask or mould, and each session begins with a fresh CT scan to confirm your position. Sessions last a few minutes to around half an hour and cause no pain.
Usually a good fit if
- Cancers where precise dose shaping protects nearby organs, such as head and neck, prostate, brain or spine.
- Large, irregular or multiple targets needing one plan.
- Patients needing re-treatment near a previously irradiated area, where conformity matters.
- Fit enough to attend daily sessions and lie still for the treatment.
May need to wait if
- Pregnancy, unless the oncology team decides otherwise.
- Inability to lie flat or still for the session, without a plan for support.
- Previous radiotherapy to the same area at doses that leave no safe margin.
- Disease already widespread where local radiotherapy will not help.
How to prepare
- Bring pathology reports, staging scans and any earlier radiotherapy records so doses to previous areas can be accounted for.
- Allow time for planning scans and plan checking, usually several days before the first treatment.
- Ask your doctor about medicines, especially for diabetes or blood thinning, and whether chemotherapy runs alongside.
- Dental review is advised before head and neck radiotherapy; ask your team.
- Plan accommodation near the centre for the full course, as daily attendance is needed.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Why is TomoTherapy chosen over another IMRT or VMAT machine for my cancer?
- How many sessions and what total dose are planned, and what is the intent: cure or symptom control?
- Which organs are being protected, and what long-term side effects should I expect?
- Will I need chemotherapy or hormone treatment alongside it?
- Can I have a copy of my treatment plan and dose records for my doctors at home?
- How are daily imaging and quality checks handled?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- No planning CT or no image check before each session.
- Refusal to give you a written treatment summary and dose record.
- A promise of cure without reviewing staging and pathology.
- Starting treatment without a physicist-verified plan.
Questions about TomoTherapy in Malaysia
How much does TomoTherapy cost in Malaysia in 2026?
Prices start from $12,700, based on 8 hospital prices in Malaysia in our database. Your final price depends on the hospital, room type and implant; we send written quotes that list what is included.
Is TomoTherapy cheaper in Malaysia than in other countries?
Malaysia ranks 4 of 9 destinations we compare for this procedure. The lowest typical price is in India at about $13,533.
How long does a medical visa for Malaysia take?
Visa-on-arrival (most nationalities) + Medical Visa for extended stays: processing takes about 3 days and the visa is valid for 30 days. We help with the hospital invitation letter.
Is TomoTherapy painful?
No. You feel nothing during treatment. Side effects, such as skin changes or fatigue, appear gradually over the weeks.
Does it make me radioactive?
No. External beam radiotherapy does not make you radioactive, so you can be around family and children.
How is it different from standard radiotherapy?
It rotates around you and varies the beam with fine control, which helps spare healthy tissue and treat complex shapes.
Can I travel during the course?
Daily sessions are usual, so travel breaks can reduce effectiveness. Plan to stay for the whole course.
