About Pediatric Cardiac (TGA Arterial Switch)
The operation is done on a heart-lung bypass machine, usually in the first two weeks of life. The surgeon divides both great arteries and reconnects them to the correct ventricle, and moves the coronary arteries across to the new aorta. Any hole between the heart's chambers is closed at the same time. Before surgery, a drug or a balloon procedure may be used to keep blood mixing.
Most children who have a successful switch go on to live full lives. Outcomes depend on the coronary artery pattern, associated defects, the baby's condition and weight at surgery, and the experience of the surgical and intensive care team. Lifelong follow-up with a paediatric then adult cardiologist is needed, as narrowing of the new arteries or valve leaks can appear later.
Newborns need to be stable enough to travel, so most families arrange the move before or soon after birth with specialist transfer. Expect a stay of one to two weeks or more in intensive care and the ward, and several weeks nearby before flying. Bring prenatal scans, echo reports and arrange a cardiologist at home.
Usually a good fit if
- A newborn with TGA confirmed by echocardiography, ideally operated on in the first weeks of life.
- Coronary artery anatomy is suitable, as shown on echo and at surgery.
- A stable baby, with adequate mixing of blood, often after a septostomy.
- A paediatric cardiac centre with intensive care and surgical experience.
May need to wait if
- Late presentation with a deconditioned left ventricle may need a staged or alternative operation.
- Complex associated defects (such as a narrowed pulmonary outflow) may require a different surgical strategy.
- Severe infection, bleeding or organ dysfunction needs stabilisation first.
- Unusual coronary patterns may increase risk and need an experienced team.
How to prepare
- Bring echocardiogram, catheter or CT reports and details of any balloon atrial septostomy already performed.
- Confirm the hospital has a dedicated paediatric cardiac surgery programme, cardiac intensive care and ECMO capability.
- Expect blood tests, blood group cross-matching and possible genetic or other screening.
- Medicines such as prostaglandin should be continued exactly as the cardiologist instructs.
- Plan a prolonged stay near the hospital with a parent present.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- What is my baby's exact anatomy, including the coronary arteries, and is an arterial switch suitable?
- How many arterial switch operations does your team do each year, and what is your survival?
- How long will my baby need a ventilator and intensive care?
- What complications do you watch for, such as coronary problems or narrowing at the join?
- What lifelong follow-up does my child need, and where can this be done at home?
- What emergency support, such as ECMO, is available on site?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- No dedicated paediatric cardiac surgeon, cardiac anaesthetist or cardiac intensive care unit.
- The centre performs very few arterial switches a year or will not share its results.
- No echocardiographic review of coronary anatomy before surgery.
- No ECMO or emergency plan for complications.
Questions about Pediatric Cardiac (TGA Arterial Switch) abroad
Which country is cheapest for Pediatric Cardiac (TGA Arterial Switch)?
The lowest typical hospital prices are in India ($30,660), Thailand ($35,733), Turkey ($42,545), out of 9 countries we compare.

It restores normal circulation and is the standard operation, but children need lifelong cardiology follow-up to watch the coronary arteries and great vessels.
What are the main risks?
Bleeding, rhythm problems, and narrowing at the reconnected arteries or coronary problems can occur. Ask the team how these are monitored.
Will my child need more surgery?
Some children need a later procedure for narrowing, often in the pulmonary artery. Your cardiologist will explain the likelihood.
Can my child be active as they grow?
Many children lead active lives, but sport advice depends on heart function and rhythm. Your cardiologist will guide this.
