About Spinal Decompression (Laminectomy)
Spinal decompression with laminectomy removes bone and ligament that press on the spinal canal or nerve roots. It is mostly for older adults whose spinal stenosis causes leg pain, numbness or weakness when walking.
Through an incision over the affected area, the surgeon removes the back part of the vertebra, called the lamina, and thickened ligament to give the nerves more room. Some surgeons use smaller, muscle-sparing approaches that decompress one side or both. If the spine is unstable, a fusion with screws and rods may be added to the decompression.
Usually a good fit if
- Leg pain, numbness or weakness on walking (neurogenic claudication) with MRI-confirmed stenosis.
- Symptoms not improving after physiotherapy and epidural injections.
- Progressive weakness or difficulty walking from nerve compression.
- Fit enough for general anaesthesia.
May need to wait if
- Back pain alone with no leg symptoms or no matching stenosis on scans.
- Significant spinal instability or deformity that may need fusion as well.
- Active infection or uncontrolled medical problems.
- Severe osteoporosis or conditions where a different approach is safer.
How to prepare
- Bring MRI or CT scans; the surgeon will match narrowing on imaging with your symptoms.
- Ask your doctor about blood thinners, anti-inflammatories and diabetes medicines to review.
- Have blood tests, an ECG and an anaesthetic review, especially for older patients with heart or lung disease.
- Tell the team about bladder, bowel or sexual changes, and any leg weakness.
- Arrange a walking aid and comfortable seating for the journey home.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Which levels will be decompressed, and do my scans match my symptoms?
- Will you need to fuse the spine as well, and under what circumstances?
- Will the operation be open or minimally invasive?
- What are the risks of dural tear, nerve injury or the stenosis returning?
- When can I walk long distances, fly and drive?
- What follow-up and physiotherapy can be arranged back home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- Surgery suggested without MRI or CT that confirms narrowing.
- Fusion recommended routinely without evidence of instability.
- No plan for early walking or clot prevention.
- No emergency plan for new bladder or bowel symptoms.
Questions about Spinal Decompression (Laminectomy) in Turkey
How much does Spinal Decompression (Laminectomy) cost in Turkey in 2026?
Prices start from $8,550, based on 8 hospital prices in Turkey in our database. Your final price depends on the hospital, room type and implant; we send written quotes that list what is included.
Is Spinal Decompression (Laminectomy) cheaper in Turkey than in other countries?
Turkey ranks 3 of 9 destinations we compare for this procedure. The lowest typical price is in India at about $9,060.
How long do I need to stay in Turkey?
Most patients spend about 2 nights in hospital. Full recovery takes about 42 days; your surgeon will tell you when you are fit to fly home.
How long does a medical visa for Turkey take?
e-Visa or Medical Visa (USHAŞ-facilitated): processing takes about 3 days and the visa is valid for 90 days. We help with the hospital invitation letter.
Will I be able to walk further afterwards?
Most people improve their walking distance and leg pain. Numbness and weakness may recover more slowly or incompletely, depending on how long the nerves were compressed.
Is a fusion always needed?
No. Simple decompression is enough for many people. Fusion is added if the spine is unstable or if removing bone would destabilise it.
Can stenosis come back?
It can, because arthritis in the spine continues over time. Some people need further decompression at the same or another level.
When can I travel home?
Many surgeons allow flights after one to two weeks if walking comfortably. Your surgeon will confirm.
