About Sperm Freezing / Banking

Sperm freezing stores semen samples at very low temperatures for future use. It is chosen before cancer treatment, vasectomy or surgery, or when a man cannot be present during treatment.

The process is simple and non-surgical. After two to five days without ejaculation, you give a sample in a private room at the clinic. The laboratory checks count, movement and shape, mixes the sample with a protective solution and divides it into small vials, which are frozen in stages and stored in liquid nitrogen. Several samples are often stored to build up enough.

Usually a good fit if

  • Men about to start chemotherapy, radiotherapy or surgery that may affect fertility.
  • Men planning a vasectomy.
  • Men with a low or declining sperm count wanting to bank samples.
  • Men whose partner will have IVF or IUI while they are away.

May need to wait if

  • Having an untreated genital infection that may contaminate the sample, until treated.
  • Severe azoospermia, where no sperm are available in the sample; surgical retrieval may be an option.
  • Unwillingness to complete consent, including decisions about disposal.
  • Misunderstanding that freezing guarantees future fertility.
How to prepare
  1. Follow the clinic's abstinence period of about two to five days before each sample.
  2. Infection screening such as HIV and hepatitis tests is required before storage.
  3. Check the storage period, consent forms and legal rules in the country, including what happens to samples after death.
  4. If starting cancer treatment, freeze before the first chemotherapy or radiotherapy dose, and inform the clinic.
  5. Bring identification and previous semen reports.
Questions to ask your surgeon
  1. How many samples and vials do you recommend I store?
  2. What are my sperm count and motility before and after freezing?
  3. How long can samples be stored and what are the renewal arrangements?
  4. Where and how is storage monitored for power or tank failure?
  5. Can the sperm be transferred to another clinic at home?
  6. What will happen to the samples if I do not renew?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
  • No infectious disease screening.
  • Unclear labelling and tracking of samples.
  • No backup storage or monitoring of tanks.
  • No written consent or storage contract.
  • Not discussing the effect of freezing on motility.

Questions about Sperm Freezing / Banking in Germany

How much does Sperm Freezing / Banking cost in Germany in 2026?

Prices start from $1,150, based on 8 hospital prices in Germany in our database. Your final price depends on the hospital, room type and implant; we send written quotes that list what is included.

Is Sperm Freezing / Banking cheaper in Germany than in other countries?

Germany ranks 9 of 9 destinations we compare for this procedure. The lowest typical price is in India at about $548.

How long does a medical visa for Germany take?

Sperm can remain viable for many years. Legal storage periods depend on the country.

Should I freeze before chemotherapy?

Yes, ideally before starting, because treatment can damage sperm or reduce production.

Can I use frozen sperm for natural conception?

No. It is used in assisted conception such as IUI or IVF.
