About IVF with Donor Eggs

IVF with donor eggs uses eggs from a screened young donor, which are fertilised in the laboratory and transferred to the recipient's womb. It is for women who cannot use their own eggs.

The donor takes stimulation injections and has her eggs collected under sedation, or frozen donor eggs are used. The eggs are fertilised with the recipient's husband's or donor sperm, often by ICSI. Meanwhile the recipient takes oestrogen and progesterone to prepare the womb lining, and one or two embryos are transferred. Spare embryos can usually be frozen for later attempts.

Usually a good fit if

  • Premature ovarian insufficiency, menopause or very low ovarian reserve.
  • Repeated IVF failure with poor egg quality, usually in older women.
  • Risk of passing on a serious inherited condition.
  • Absent or non-functioning ovaries after surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

May need to wait if

  • Uncontrolled medical conditions such as severe heart disease or hypertension that make pregnancy unsafe.
  • A womb problem that has not been corrected, such as a significant fibroid or scarring.
  • Not having considered the emotional and legal implications of using donor eggs.
  • Age or health factors that your obstetric team considers high risk.
How to prepare
  1. The recipient needs a womb assessment (scan, sometimes hysteroscopy), hormone and infection tests, and a general health review including blood pressure.
  2. Both partners usually have infection screening, and the male partner needs a semen analysis.
  3. Understand the law on donor anonymity, parentage and the child's rights in your home country and the treatment country.
  4. Review medicines with your doctor and plan roughly two to three weeks near the clinic.
  5. Bring identity documents, marriage or relationship papers if required, and earlier fertility records.
Questions to ask your surgeon
  1. How are donors screened medically, genetically and psychologically?
  2. Is the donor's identity anonymous, and what information about her will my child be able to access?
  3. How many embryos will be transferred, and what is your policy on freezing extra embryos?
  4. Are fresh or frozen donor eggs used, and does the match consider physical characteristics?
  5. What does the recipient need to do to prepare the womb lining?
  6. What antenatal care arrangements should be made at home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
  • Unclear or undocumented donor screening and consent.
  • Promises of guaranteed pregnancy or choice of the child's characteristics.
  • No clear legal document about parentage and donor rights.
  • Transfer of several embryos pushed to raise success rates.
  • No details on the donor's age or number of previous donations.

Questions about IVF with Donor Eggs in India

How much does IVF with Donor Eggs cost in India in 2026?

Prices start from $5,050, based on 26 hospital prices in India in our database. Your final price depends on the hospital, room type and implant; we send written quotes that list what is included.

Is IVF with Donor Eggs cheaper in India than in other countries?

India ranks 1 of 3 destinations we compare for this procedure. The lowest typical price is in India at about $7,240.

How long does a medical visa for India take?

Medical Visa (e-Medical available): processing takes about 4 days and the visa is valid for 60 days. We help with the hospital invitation letter.

Will the baby look like me?

The baby is genetically related to the egg donor and the sperm provider, not to the recipient. You carry and give birth to the child. Many families choose a donor whose appearance resembles theirs.

Is donor egg IVF more successful than using my own eggs?

In women with poor egg quality or age-related decline, success rates are usually higher with eggs from young donors, because success depends mostly on the age of the egg.

Can I use a relative as a donor?

This depends on local laws and the clinic's policy. Many countries restrict or forbid it.

Are the pregnancy risks different?

Some risks, such as high blood pressure in pregnancy, are higher after donor egg pregnancies, so close antenatal monitoring is important.
