About Hepatic Trisegmentectomy
Hepatic trisegmentectomy removes three segments of the liver, typically the right lobe with part of the left, for large tumours. It is a major liver operation that requires careful planning of the size of the liver remnant.
Before surgery, CT or MRI volumetry estimates the future liver remnant, and if it is too small, portal vein embolisation or staged surgery may be used to help it grow. The operation divides the liver along defined planes, controls the blood inflow and bile ducts, and removes the segments in one piece. It is usually performed through an open incision in a specialist liver unit.
Usually a good fit if
- A large or centrally placed liver tumour that needs removal of three segments to clear.
- Healthy or well-functioning liver with an adequate remnant volume, often after portal vein embolisation.
- Fit for a long major operation, confirmed by a specialist liver team.
May need to wait if
- A remnant liver that is too small risks liver failure and needs other treatment or preparation.
- Cirrhosis with poor liver function generally rules out such a large resection.
- Spread outside the liver, or tumour invading vessels that cannot be reconstructed, may not suit surgery.
How to prepare
- Bring high-quality CT or MRI scans and liver function tests; volume of the remaining liver must be measured.
- Ask whether portal vein embolisation is needed beforehand and allow weeks for liver growth.
- Tell your doctor about hepatitis, cirrhosis, alcohol use and earlier chemotherapy.
- Ask your doctor about adjusting blood thinners and diabetes medicines.
- Stop alcohol and smoking and follow nutrition advice to reduce complications.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- What proportion of liver will remain, and is that safe for me?
- Do I need portal vein embolisation or other preparation first?
- How many extended liver resections do you do each year?
- What is the plan for post-operative liver failure or bile leak?
- Is intensive care available and how long will I be there?
- What monitoring and treatment follows at home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- No measurement of remaining liver volume is done before surgery.
- The unit has no intensive care and cannot manage liver failure.
- Surgeon cannot give number of major liver resections done yearly.
- No liver or oncology multidisciplinary review before surgery.

How much does Hepatic Trisegmentectomy cost in Germany in 2026?
Prices start from $65,500, based on 8 hospital prices in Germany in our database. Your final price depends on the hospital, room type and implant; we send written quotes that list what is included.
Is Hepatic Trisegmentectomy cheaper in Germany than in other countries?
Germany ranks 9 of 9 destinations we compare for this procedure. The lowest typical price is in India at about $25,513.
How long do I need to stay in Germany?
Most patients spend about 10 nights in hospital. Full recovery takes about 70 days; your surgeon will tell you when you are fit to fly home.
How long does a medical visa for Germany take?
Schengen Medical Treatment Visa (Type C or D): processing takes about 10 days and the visa is valid for 90 days. We help with the hospital invitation letter.
Why is portal vein embolisation used?
Blocking one branch of the portal vein makes the other side grow over several weeks, so more liver remains after surgery and the risk of liver failure is lower.
Is this operation dangerous?
It is among the larger liver operations, so risks of bleeding and liver failure are higher than for smaller resections. Careful selection and experienced teams reduce them.
Will my liver regenerate?
Yes, the remaining liver regrows over weeks to months, depending on its health and the amount left.
How long should I stay near the hospital?
Usually until liver tests are stable and the drain is out, often one to two weeks after discharge, as your surgeon advises.
