About Fontan Procedure

The Fontan procedure is the final stage of surgery for children born with only one effective pumping chamber in the heart. It connects the body's veins directly to the lungs so oxygen-poor blood flows through them without a pump.

Done under general anaesthesia with a heart-lung machine, the surgeon links the inferior vena cava to the pulmonary arteries, usually with a tunnel inside or outside the heart. It follows earlier stages, such as the Glenn procedure, and is typically performed between ages two and five. A small opening may be left to relieve pressure.

Usually a good fit if

  • Single-ventricle heart disease such as tricuspid atresia or hypoplastic left heart syndrome with a previous Glenn operation.
  • Pulmonary artery pressures and heart function that suit passive blood flow to the lungs.
  • Age and growth suitable for completion, usually two to five years.
  • Care by a specialised congenital heart team.

May need to wait if

  • High lung artery pressure or resistance, which prevents a Fontan circulation from working.
  • Poor pumping function of the single ventricle or severe valve leakage.
  • Underdeveloped lung arteries needing repair first.
  • Active infection or other serious illness.
How to prepare
  1. Bring all previous operation reports, catheter studies, echocardiograms and MRI scans to define your child's anatomy.
  2. Have blood tests, kidney and liver assessments and a cardiac catheterisation if requested.
  3. Review medicines such as diuretics, aspirin or other anticoagulants with the cardiologist, who will tell you what to adjust.
  4. Treat any recent infection and keep vaccinations up to date.
  5. Plan a long stay near the hospital, with a parent or carer present throughout.
Questions to ask your surgeon
  1. Which Fontan type will you use, an internal tunnel or external conduit?
  2. Will a fenestration be left, and what are the pros and cons?
  3. How many Fontan operations does your centre perform yearly, and what are your results?
  4. What medicines, including blood thinners, will my child need?
  5. How will we monitor liver and kidney health in the long term?
  6. Which congenital cardiologist can follow my child at home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
  • The centre has no dedicated paediatric cardiac intensive care unit.
  • Surgeons or team lack regular congenital heart experience.
  • No long-term follow-up plan for liver and heart function.
  • Operation recommended without recent catheterisation or imaging.
  • Guarantees of a normal life expectancy.

Questions about Fontan Procedure in Turkey

How much does Fontan Procedure cost in Turkey in 2026?

Prices start from $18,300, based on 8 hospital prices in Turkey in our database. Your final price depends on the hospital, room type and implant; we send written quotes that list what is included.

Is Fontan Procedure cheaper in Turkey than in other countries?

Turkey ranks 3 of 9 destinations we compare for this procedure. The lowest typical price is in India at about $18,803.

How long do I need to stay in Turkey?

Most patients spend about 12 nights in hospital. Full recovery takes about 56 days; your surgeon will tell you when you are fit to fly home.

How long does a medical visa for Turkey take?

e-Visa or Medical Visa (USHAŞ-facilitated): processing takes about 3 days and the visa is valid for 90 days. We help with the hospital invitation letter.

Does the Fontan cure the heart condition?

No. It is a palliative operation that improves oxygen levels, but a single ventricle still does the work. Lifelong specialist care is essential.

What is a fenestration?

It is a small opening that lets some blood bypass the lungs, lowering pressure. It can be closed later by catheter.

Can my child be active?

Most children can do light to moderate activity, and exercise is encouraged. Your cardiologist will guide intensity.

What problems can occur later?

Possible later issues include fluid build-up, rhythm problems, liver changes and protein loss from the gut. Regular follow-up detects these early.
