About Kyphoplasty (Vertebral Body Augmentation)
Kyphoplasty restores and stabilises a collapsed spinal bone, usually from osteoporosis, by inflating a balloon and filling the space with bone cement. It is for painful vertebral compression fractures.
Through a small cut in the back, a needle is guided by X-ray into the fractured vertebra. A balloon is inflated to lift the bone and create a space, then deflated, and the cavity is filled with medical cement that hardens within minutes. It takes under an hour per level and is often done under local anaesthesia with sedation.
Usually a good fit if
- Painful vertebral compression fracture from osteoporosis, recent and still painful despite weeks of pain relief and bracing.
- Fractures caused by spinal tumours or myeloma, with pain.
- MRI confirmation of a recent fracture matching the pain.
- Pain limiting walking or breathing.
May need to wait if
- Active infection or bleeding disorders that are uncorrected.
- Fracture that has fully healed, or pain from another cause.
- Spinal cord or nerve compression from the fracture, which needs decompression.
- Severe collapse of the vertebra, which may make treatment difficult.
How to prepare
- Have MRI or CT of the spine to show a recent fracture, and a bone density scan if due, since osteoporosis needs treating.
- Tell your doctor about blood thinners, allergies to cement or contrast, and heart or lung problems.
- Review blood thinners and osteoporosis medicines with your doctor; do not change them yourself.
- Have blood tests if requested, and treat any infection first.
- Arrange a lift home and check fitness to fly.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Does my MRI show a recent fracture that explains my pain?
- Why kyphoplasty rather than vertebroplasty or conservative care?
- What height can realistically be restored and how do you guard against cement leakage?
- What treatment for osteoporosis should I start, to prevent new fractures?
- How many kyphoplasties do you do?
- What follow-up can I have at home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- No MRI or CT confirming a recent fracture.
- No treatment plan for osteoporosis, the cause of the fracture.
- Promising restoration of full height.
- No plan for monitoring new fractures.

Many feel relief within one or two days, though results vary.
Is cement leakage dangerous?
Small leaks are common and usually harmless. Rarely, leakage presses on nerves or travels to the lungs.

Kyphoplasty or vertebroplasty?
Both fill the bone with cement. Kyphoplasty uses a balloon to restore height first. Your doctor will advise.
