About Chemotherapy (per cycle)
A chemotherapy cycle is one planned round of anti-cancer drugs followed by a rest period for the body to recover. Your oncologist chooses the drugs and number of cycles for your cancer type and stage.
Drugs are given into a vein, by mouth or occasionally by other routes, over hours or days, then a break of one to several weeks allows healthy cells to recover. Regimens may combine several agents and may be given before surgery to shrink a tumour, after surgery to reduce recurrence, or as the main treatment for cancer that has spread. Doses are adjusted using blood counts and kidney and liver function.
Usually a good fit if
- A cancer type and stage for which chemotherapy is part of the recommended treatment plan.
- Blood counts, kidney and liver function good enough to give the planned doses safely.
- Enough general strength and ability to attend scheduled visits and report fevers promptly.
May need to wait if
- Active serious infection or fever needs treatment and often a delay in the cycle.
- Very low blood counts mean the cycle should be postponed until they recover.
- Significant liver, kidney or heart problems may require dose changes or another regimen.
How to prepare
- Bring your pathology, staging scans and full list of previous treatments so the regimen can be checked.
- Have blood tests, plus kidney, liver and heart checks if the drugs require them, before each cycle.
- Ask your doctor which regular medicines and supplements to continue, as some interact with chemotherapy.
- Review dental health, and ask about vaccinations and fertility preservation before starting.
- Plan transport and support, since you may feel tired or nauseous after infusions.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Which drugs and doses are in my regimen, and what is the aim: cure, control or relief?
- How many cycles are planned and how will you judge if it is working?
- Which side effects need urgent attention and who do I call at night?
- Do I need growth-factor injections, anti-sickness plans or a port?
- Can my local hospital give some cycles, and how would they get my protocol?
- How will hair loss, fertility and long-term effects be managed?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- The regimen is not written down with drug names, doses and cycle dates.
- No emergency contact or plan for fever during the low-count period.
- Treatment is offered without confirmed pathology or staging.
- No mention of how blood counts are checked before each cycle.
