How long does knee replacement recovery take?

Medcasts editorial team

Week 1: Discharge day 3-5, walking with walker/stick, physiotherapy starts day 1 post-op. Week 2-4: Walker transitions to single stick, stairs training, drive-ban lifts around week 4-6. Week 6-12: Back to sedentary work at 6 weeks, light exercise at 8-10 weeks, swimming at 10-12 weeks. Full recovery: 6-12 months for maximum range of motion. Plan 3-4 weeks in-country for international travel.

How this page is made

Methodology and editorial standards

Answers are written by the Medcasts editorial team and updated when prices, guidelines or visa rules change.

  1. Hospital data. Accreditation, licences and facilities are checked against public registries (JCI, NABH, health-ministry licence lists) and hospital documents, and rechecked regularly.
  2. Doctor credentials. Qualifications and specialty come from the doctor's hospital profile and national medical council registers.
  3. Prices. Price ranges come from written hospital quotes and packages, not advertised rates.
  4. Clinical text. Written by our editorial team and checked against current published guidelines before it goes live.
  5. Independence. Hospitals cannot pay to change their position on our pages.
