TAVI, also called TAVR, replaces a narrowed aortic valve through a catheter, usually inserted in the groin, without open-heart surgery. It is mainly used for older people or those at higher surgical risk.

Kuhusu TAVI / TAVR (Transcatheter Aortic Valve)
A folded replacement valve is guided on a catheter through an artery to the aortic valve, then expanded inside the old one, which is pushed aside. Heart-team assessment with CT scans decides the access route and valve size. Many centres use light sedation and local anaesthetic, though some use general anaesthesia. Both balloon-expandable and self-expanding valves are used.
Most people notice easier breathing and more energy within days to weeks. Results depend on the valve anatomy, how well it seats, your other health problems and the operator's experience. A pacemaker is needed afterwards in a minority of cases, and long-term durability data are still building compared with surgical valves, especially in younger patients.
The hospital stay is often just a few days, and many people return to light daily activity within a couple of weeks. Bring your CT, echo and angiogram reports. After you get home you will need echocardiogram follow-up, antibiotic cover for dental work, and guidance from your cardiologist on any blood-thinning tablets.
Kwa kawaida inafaa kama
- Severe symptomatic aortic stenosis in older adults, usually those above about 75.
- Patients judged high or intermediate risk for open surgery by the heart team.
- Frailty, previous chest surgery or other illness that makes open surgery less safe.
Huenda ukahitaji kusubiri kama
- Active endocarditis or infection, which must be treated first.
- Anatomy such as very small leg arteries or a bicuspid valve that may favour open surgery.
- Younger, low-risk patients where long-term valve durability argues for surgery.
Jinsi ya kujiandaa
- Bring your echo, CT scans, angiogram and medication list; a CT of the aorta and leg arteries is usually needed.
- Expect blood tests, kidney function and a dental check to remove infection risks.
- Ask your cardiologist about blood thinners and diabetes tablets; only change them on their instruction.
- Mention any contrast allergy or kidney disease before CT and the procedure.
- Plan to stay near the hospital for a few days and arrange a companion for the flight home.
Maswali ya kumuuliza daktari wako wa upasuaji
- Has a heart team assessed whether TAVR or open surgery is better for me?
- Which valve type will you use, and how long is it expected to last?
- How many TAVRs do you perform each year, and is cardiac surgery on site?
- What is my risk of needing a pacemaker, and how will my rhythm be monitored?
- Which blood thinners will I need afterwards, and for how long?
- What follow-up scans do you advise, and who can do them at home?
Dalili za hatari unapolinganisha hospitali
- No heart team decision documented, or cardiac surgery not available on site.
- No CT scan of the aorta and access arteries before the procedure.
- TAVR promised for a young, low-risk patient with no discussion of valve durability.
- Surgeon cannot state their yearly TAVR volume.
