Kuhusu Heart Transplantation

Candidates are assessed in detail and placed on a waiting list until a matching donor heart becomes available. Under general anaesthesia and with a heart-lung machine, the surgeon removes the diseased heart and sews in the donor heart. After surgery you need immunosuppressant medicines for life to prevent rejection, along with frequent monitoring and biopsies.

Most recipients gain much better energy and quality of life, and many live for ten years or more. Outcomes depend on your age, other illnesses, the condition of the donor heart, how closely you follow medicines and the transplant team's experience. Rejection, infection, kidney problems and graft vessel disease are the main long-term concerns.

Waiting times, donor allocation and legal rules differ between countries, so ask carefully whether a foreign patient can be listed. Expect about three weeks in hospital and months living close to the transplant centre for frequent checks. Plan lifelong follow-up with a transplant cardiologist at home before you leave.

Kwa kawaida inafaa kama

  • Advanced heart failure not helped by medicines, devices or other surgery.
  • Severe symptoms and poor outlook despite maximum treatment.
  • Reasonable health in other organs and a supportive carer.
  • Understanding and commitment to lifelong medicines and follow-up.

Huenda ukahitaji kusubiri kama

  • Severe lung, kidney or liver disease that would limit survival, unless combined transplants are considered.
  • Active infection, recent cancer or uncontrolled substance misuse.
  • Inability to take medicines reliably or attend follow-up.
  • Very high lung artery pressures that cannot be reduced.
Jinsi ya kujiandaa
  1. Complete the full transplant assessment: heart catheterisation, scans, blood tests, infection screening, dental and psychosocial review.
  2. Continue heart failure medicines exactly as your cardiologist instructs, and report any worsening.
  3. Update vaccinations and treat infections, including dental problems, before listing.
  4. Understand that you must be near the transplant centre when a donor heart becomes available, and plan housing.
  5. Prepare for lifelong immunosuppressant medicines and regular visits.
Maswali ya kumuuliza daktari wako wa upasuaji
  1. How does your centre allocate donor hearts, and is my case legally eligible?
  2. What are your one-year and five-year survival results for patients like me?
  3. What anti-rejection medicines will I take and what are their side effects?
  4. How will rejection be monitored, and where can I have this at home?
  5. What is the plan if a donor heart is not found in time?
  6. What devices, such as an LVAD, might support me while waiting?
Dalili za hatari unapolinganisha hospitali
  • The centre offers a heart without verifying legal donor sourcing.
  • Guaranteed rapid availability of a donor heart.
  • No transplant assessment or psychosocial review.
  • No lifelong follow-up or immunosuppression plan.
