The recovery timeline

  1. In hospital · 28 nights

    Day 0–28

Monitored recovery: pain control, wound and vital-sign checks, and early mobilisation. The care team confirms you can eat, move and manage pain before discharge.

  2. First days near the hospital

    Day 29–Day 33

International patients stay near the hospital for the first post-discharge review. Wound checks, medication adjustment, and the green light before any longer travel happen in this window.

  3. Early recovery

    Week 5–Week 13

Gradual return of energy and mobility. Light daily activity resumes; strenuous activity, heavy lifting and driving are still restricted. Most discomfort settles across this phase.

  4. Back to normal activity

    Day 180

By about day 180, most patients are back to desk work and routine daily life. Your surgeon's specific clearance — not the calendar — is what matters; follow their sign-off.

  5. Full recovery

    Day 180+

Full strength, final result and complete tissue healing continue past the return-to-normal point — often several more weeks. Keep follow-up appointments and report anything unexpected.

Fit to fly

Plan your flight home for day 31–72, not earlier

Long-haul flights raise clot risk during recovery, and cabin pressure can affect healing tissue and air-containing spaces. Book a flexible return ticket, keep accommodation near the hospital until the first review, and get written fit-to-fly clearance from your treating surgeon before you travel.

Seek help immediately if

Recovery red flags

  • Fever ≥38°C (infection risk during treatment)
  • Uncontrolled nausea, vomiting or inability to keep fluids down
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising
  • Severe fatigue or breathlessness

This is general guidance, not medical advice — your discharge instructions and surgeon override anything here. When in doubt, contact your care team or local emergency services.

Recovery questions

How long is recovery after allogeneic bone marrow transplant?

Most patients are back to routine daily activity around day 180. The hospital stay is about 28 nights, followed by a staged return over the following weeks. Full strength and the final result continue beyond day 180. Your surgeon's clearance — not the calendar — is the real signal.

When can I fly home after allogeneic bone marrow transplant?

Most international patients are cleared to fly roughly 31–72 days after the procedure, once the first post-discharge review is done. Long-haul flights carry a clot risk during recovery — get explicit fit-to-fly sign-off from your treating surgeon before booking, and plan accommodation near the hospital until then.

When can I return to work?

Desk or light work is usually possible around day 180; physically demanding work takes longer and depends on your surgeon's clearance. Build a buffer into your plans rather than booking to the minimum.

Will recovery be painful?

Some discomfort is normal and is managed with prescribed medication that is stepped down as you heal. Pain that worsens, or isn't controlled by your medication, is not normal — contact your care team.

What follow-up will I need back home?

Before you leave, get a full discharge summary, imaging, and a medication list to hand to your local doctor. Arrange oncology follow-up locally for ongoing checks. We help coordinate this handover.
