Can I fly after CABG?
Most patients are cleared for short-haul flights at 2 weeks and long-haul flights at 4–6 weeks post-CABG, assuming uncomplicated recovery. The constraints: chest cage instability for the first 6–8 weeks, DVT risk on long flights, and the practical reality that you don't want to be 35,000 feet up if a complication develops.
Specific guidance: walk every 60–90 minutes during long flights; wear compression stockings; continue any prescribed anticoagulation; bring a copy of your discharge summary in carry-on; have your operating program's emergency contact saved.
Don't fly home before your discharge clinic visit at the operating program. That visit confirms the wound is dry, the echo is reassuring, and there's no early evidence of pericardial effusion.
