Medical visa for Turkey
Most nationalities eligible for Turkey's standard e-Visa (90 days, multiple entry) can use it for medical travel without needing a dedicated medical category. For longer stays or when the hospital is USHAŞ-partnered (the government medical-tourism facilitator), a Medical Visa with hospital invitation letter is processed through USHAŞ in 2-3 working days.

About Microdiscectomy
Microdiscectomy removes the piece of a herniated disc that is pressing on a spinal nerve, using a small incision and an operating microscope. It is for people with sciatica or arm pain from a disc that has not settled with time and treatment.
Through an incision of a couple of centimetres, the surgeon moves the muscles aside, opens a small window in the bone or ligament and gently shifts the nerve to reach the protruding disc fragment. Only the part pressing on the nerve is taken out, and the rest of the disc is left. Tubular retractors and endoscopic versions are variations of the same operation.
Usually a good fit if
- Leg (sciatic) or arm pain matching a disc herniation seen on MRI.
- Pain that has not improved after about six weeks of conservative treatment, or earlier if severe.
- Weakness in a muscle group from nerve compression, such as foot drop, which needs prompt assessment.
- Good general health and no major instability of the spine.
May need to wait if
- Back pain only, without nerve-related leg or arm symptoms.
- Scan findings that do not match the symptoms, or no disc herniation.
- Significant spinal instability, where a fusion may be needed.
- Active infection or bleeding disorders needing optimisation first.
How to prepare
- Bring your MRI and clinical notes; the surgeon will match the disc position to your symptoms.
- Ask your doctor which blood thinners and anti-inflammatory medicines to review ahead of surgery.
- Complete routine blood tests and an anaesthetic review, especially if you have heart or lung conditions.
- Tell the team about any weakness, numbness or bladder or bowel changes beforehand.
- Plan comfortable seating and a short walking routine for the journey home.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Does my MRI clearly match my symptoms, and is surgery needed now or can I try other treatment first?
- Will you operate with a microscope or endoscope, and through what size of incision?
- What is the chance of the disc herniating again, and how can I lower it?
- Will you remove only the fragment or more of the disc?
- When can I fly, drive and return to work?
- What physiotherapy and review are needed once I am home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- Surgery recommended without MRI or without matching your symptoms to the scan.
- Pressure to have a fusion when a simple disc removal would address the problem.
- No mention of the risk of recurrence, nerve injury or dural tear.
- No emergency pathway for bladder or bowel changes (cauda equina) after you return home.
Questions about Microdiscectomy in Turkey
How long do I need to stay in Turkey?
Most patients spend about 2 nights in hospital. Full recovery takes about 30 days; your surgeon will tell you when you are fit to fly home.
How long does a medical visa for Turkey take?
e-Visa or Medical Visa (USHAŞ-facilitated): processing takes about 3 days and the visa is valid for 90 days. We help with the hospital invitation letter.
Will my leg pain go away right after surgery?
Many people notice relief of leg pain within days, but nerve numbness or tingling can take weeks to months to settle. Back pain can persist, as the operation targets the nerve.
Can the disc herniate again?
Yes, a small proportion of people have a repeat herniation at the same level, most often in the first months. Good lifting technique and staying active reduce this.
How soon can I fly home?
Many surgeons allow short flights after one to two weeks if walking comfortably. Longer journeys need regular movement. Your surgeon will confirm timing.
Do I need a fusion as well?
Most herniated discs are treated by removal alone. Fusion is only considered if the spine is unstable, which your surgeon will assess.
