About Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty reduces or reshapes the inner lips (labia minora) of the vulva. It is for adults who have discomfort, irritation or self-consciousness related to the size or shape of the labia.

The surgeon trims the excess tissue, either along the edge (trim technique) or with a wedge-shaped excision that keeps the natural border. The cuts are closed with fine dissolving stitches. It can be done under local anaesthetic, often with sedation, or under general anaesthesia, and takes around an hour.

Usually a good fit if

  • Adults with enlarged labia minora causing pain, chafing, or hygiene or exercise difficulties.
  • Discomfort during intercourse or with tight clothing due to labial size or asymmetry.
  • Personal concerns about appearance that are persistent and well considered, not driven by pressure.
  • Good general health, with growth complete.

May need to wait if

  • Under 18 years, unless there is a clear medical need assessed by a specialist.
  • Body dysmorphic concerns or unrealistic expectations, which should be assessed before surgery.
  • Active genital infection or skin disease, or pregnancy.
  • Smoking or conditions affecting wound healing until your doctor advises it is safe.
How to prepare
  1. Have a consultation to examine your anatomy and discuss realistic goals, and bring any relevant medical history.
  2. Avoid shaving or waxing the area before surgery as instructed, and treat any skin infection or thrush first.
  3. Ask your doctor about blood thinners, aspirin and herbal supplements, and follow only the instructions you are given.
  4. Arrange loose clothing, pads, ice packs and someone to help you at home for a day or two.
  5. Plan time off from work and confirm with your surgeon when you can fly.
Questions to ask your surgeon
  1. Which technique will you use (trim, wedge or other), and why is it right for me?
  2. How will you preserve sensation and the natural edge of the labia?
  3. How many labiaplasty procedures do you perform each year, and do you have before and after photos?
  4. What are the risks of scarring, asymmetry or needing revision?
  5. What anaesthetic will I have, and who will look after me after the operation?
  6. How do I care for the wound, and who can I contact at home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
  • Pressure to book surgery at the first consultation, without time to think.
  • No examination or discussion of risks such as reduced sensation or scarring.
  • Unrealistic promises of a perfect appearance.
  • A surgeon without gynaecology or plastic surgery training performing intimate surgery.
