About ACL Reconstruction
ACL reconstruction replaces a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the knee with a graft. It is for people with instability who play pivoting sports or whose knee gives way in daily life.
The surgeon uses keyhole instruments to remove the torn ligament and drill tunnels in the thigh and shin bones, then pulls a graft through and fixes it. The graft is commonly taken from your own hamstring or patellar tendon, or sometimes from a donor. Damage to the meniscus or cartilage may be treated in the same operation.
Usually a good fit if
- Active people with a torn ACL and giving-way episodes that affect sport or daily life.
- Combined ACL and meniscus injury needing repair.
- Young patients and those who play pivoting sports.
- Motivated to follow rehabilitation for many months.
May need to wait if
- Stiff, swollen knee, which needs recovery of movement before surgery.
- Open growth plates in a child, which require a modified technique.
- Advanced arthritis, where reconstruction brings little benefit.
- Active knee infection or unwillingness to follow a long rehabilitation programme.
How to prepare
- Have an MRI to confirm the tear and check the meniscus and cartilage, and complete pre-habilitation exercises to regain movement and strength.
- Let the swelling settle and your knee straighten fully before surgery, as advised.
- Review blood thinners and anti-inflammatory medicines with your doctor; do not change them yourself.
- Discuss graft choice in advance, since hamstring, patellar tendon and quadriceps grafts differ.
- Arrange crutches and a brace, and check fitness to fly and clot prevention.
Questions to ask your surgeon
- Which graft do you recommend for me and why: hamstring, patellar tendon, quadriceps or donor?
- Will my meniscus or cartilage injury be repaired at the same time?
- What is the re-tear rate and how long until I can return to sport?
- How do you fix the graft and handle the growth plates if I am young?
- What rehabilitation will I need, and is it supervised?
- What follow-up can I have at home?
Red flags when comparing hospitals
- No MRI before the operation or no examination of other knee structures.
- Promising return to sport in a few months.
- No rehabilitation plan.
- No discussion of graft options.
Questions about ACL Reconstruction in South Korea
How long do I need to stay in South Korea?
Most patients spend about 1 nights in hospital. Full recovery takes about 180 days; your surgeon will tell you when you are fit to fly home.
How long does a medical visa for South Korea take?
C-3-3 Medical Treatment Visa: processing takes about 5 days and the visa is valid for 90 days. We help with the hospital invitation letter.
When can I return to sport?
Usually around nine months, and only after strength and hop tests are passed. Returning earlier increases re-tear risk.
Which graft is best?
Each has pros and cons. Hamstring causes less front-knee pain, patellar tendon heals firmly, and quadriceps is gaining use. Your surgeon will advise.
Do I need a brace?
A brace may be used in early recovery for comfort. Long-term bracing is not usually necessary.
Will arthritis develop?
ACL injury raises the long-term risk of arthritis, regardless of surgery, particularly with meniscus injury.
