What is laser vision correction (LASIK, SMILE, PRK)?
Laser vision correction reshapes the cornea to correct refractive error.
• LASIK: most common. Femtosecond laser creates a corneal flap; excimer laser reshapes underlying tissue. Quick recovery (24–48 hours).
• SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction): newer. Femtosecond laser creates a small lens-shaped tissue piece; surgeon removes through tiny incision. Less dry-eye effect than LASIK.
• PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy): older but still used. Surface ablation without flap; longer recovery (5–7 days) but suitable for thin corneas.
Candidacy: stable refraction, adequate corneal thickness, healthy tear film. Pregnancy and active autoimmune disease are contraindications.
For international care, LASIK at top programs costs $1,000–1,800 per eye in Turkey or India vs $2,000–3,500 US. Quality is comparable when programs use modern equipment (femtosecond + excimer laser).
