What is glaucoma surgery?
Glaucoma surgery aims to lower intraocular pressure when medications and laser are insufficient. Options include:
• Trabeculectomy: traditional gold-standard, creates a new drainage channel. • Tube shunt (Ahmed, Baerveldt): drainage device for refractory cases. • MIGS (minimally invasive glaucoma surgery): newer techniques like iStent, Hydrus, Xen — less invasive but lower IOP-lowering effect.
Decision points: severity of glaucoma, prior treatments, anatomy, patient preference. MIGS is often combined with cataract surgery for mild-moderate glaucoma; trabeculectomy or tube shunts for severe disease.
Recovery: most glaucoma surgery is outpatient. Vision may be temporarily affected. Long-term IOP control is the metric, not immediate vision.
For international travel, glaucoma surgery is feasible at established eye programs. Confirm follow-up imaging and pressure checks transfer back to home ophthalmologist.
