What if I'm immunocompromised?
Immunocompromised patients (post-transplant, on chemotherapy, on biologics, with HIV, with autoimmune disease on immunosuppression) need additional precautions for travel and surgery:
• Live vaccines may be contraindicated. • Infection risk elevated; antibiotic prophylaxis often extended. • Drug-drug interactions with anesthesia and post-op medications need careful review. • Wound healing is slower; longer recovery windows. • Some procedures may be deferred until immunosuppression can be temporarily reduced.
For planned international travel, coordinate with your treating immunologist or infectious disease specialist. Don't make decisions in isolation.
Program selection matters: choose programs with experience managing immunocompromised patients, dedicated infection control, and immediate ID consultation availability.
