How long does a knee replacement last?
Modern total knee replacements have 10-year implant survival rates of 90–95% at experienced centers, and 80–85% at 20 years. Survivorship depends on patient factors (BMI, activity level, age at implantation) and surgeon technique (alignment, balance, soft-tissue handling).
Younger, more active, heavier patients have higher revision rates over time. A 50-year-old with BMI 35 implanted today has a meaningful chance of needing revision in their lifetime; a 70-year-old with BMI 25 will likely never need revision.
What actually drives longevity: implant choice, surgical technique, post-op rehab quality, and weight management long-term. The brand of implant matters less than the surgeon's experience with that specific implant.
