Do I need to isolate after surgery abroad?
Most patients don't need formal isolation, but minimizing infection exposure during recovery is wise:
• In hospital: standard infection-control precautions managed by the program.
• Post-discharge in destination: stay in clean accommodation, avoid crowded indoor spaces, hand hygiene, mask in transit.
• During flight home: mask, avoid crowded boarding lines, hand hygiene, separate seat from non-related travelers if possible.
For specific procedures with elevated infection risk (transplant, immunosuppressed cancer patients): formal precautions matter more. Surgical-site infection risk also extends 1–4 weeks post-op for any wound.
Before returning to work, school, or large gatherings: typically wait 2–4 weeks for major surgery to allow primary wound healing. Discuss specifics with operating program.
