General anesthesia
Anesthesia that puts the patient fully unconscious for surgery.
General anesthesia uses inhaled and intravenous drugs to induce unconsciousness, muscle relaxation, and pain control. Patients are intubated for breathing support throughout.
What this means for you: confirm an anesthesiologist (MD) — not just a nurse anesthetist — manages your case. Pre-op anesthesia consultation should review allergies, prior reactions, and airway concerns.
