The surgeon smooths the bone, places anchors into the humerus, and passes stitches through the tendon to pull it back to its footprint. A sling protects the repair while the tendon heals to the bone.
Pain relief is usually reliable, while strength and range return slowly over six to twelve months. Results depend on the size and age of the tear, the quality of the muscle and tendon, smoking, diabetes, age and keeping to the rehabilitation plan. Large chronic tears have a higher chance of not healing, or of tearing again.
Many people go home the same day or the next. Plan to remain near the hospital for the first wound review, and arrange for help at home, since the sling is worn for around six weeks and the arm is kept supported. - Have routine blood tests and an anaesthetic review; stop smoking, which weakens tendon healing.
- Organise help at home; you will have one arm in a sling for about six weeks.
