Sobre Implante de marcapasso / CDI
Under local anaesthesia with sedation, the doctor makes a small cut below the collarbone, guides one or more leads through a vein into the heart and attaches them to a generator placed under the skin. The device is tested and programmed before you wake. The choice between pacemaker, ICD or a combined device depends on your rhythm problem and heart strength.
A pacemaker typically relieves symptoms such as dizziness and fainting soon after implantation, while an ICD provides protection against sudden cardiac arrest. Outcomes depend on the reason for the device, your underlying heart condition and the programming. Risks include infection, lead movement and, with ICDs, inappropriate shocks.
Plan to stay near the hospital for about two days. Avoid lifting your arm high for a few weeks and ask about driving advice. Keep your device card and bring cardiology reports. Arrange a device clinic at home to check the device regularly, and share the manufacturer and model with them.
Geralmente indicado se
- Slow heart rhythm causing fainting, dizziness or fatigue, or heart block.
- For an ICD, survival of dangerous rhythms or high risk due to weak heart pumping.
- Symptoms clearly linked to rhythm on ECG or monitoring.
- Fitness for a minor procedure.
Pode ser necessário esperar se
- Active infection or fever, which must be treated first.
- Slow rhythm due to reversible causes such as medicines or electrolyte problems.
- Very limited life expectancy where an ICD would not help.
- Blocked veins preventing lead placement.
Como se preparar
- Have an ECG, rhythm monitoring, echocardiogram, blood tests and chest X-ray.
- Review blood thinners, heart and diabetes medicines with your doctor, who will tell you what to adjust.
- Report any infection, fever or skin problem near the chest.
- Fast for the hours the team specifies.
- Confirm a device clinic near home can follow your device brand, and get a device card.
