The surgeon removes the breast tissue, sometimes sparing the skin or nipple, and often checks the armpit lymph nodes. Reconstruction may place an implant or expander under the chest muscle, or transfer your own tissue, such as an abdominal or back flap, to form a new breast. Immediate reconstruction avoids a period without a breast, though radiotherapy plans may favour delaying it.
Results depend on the technique chosen, body shape, skin quality, radiotherapy and the surgeon's experience. Implants are quicker but may need replacement over time, while flaps feel more natural but need a longer operation and recovery. Additional procedures for symmetry or nipple reconstruction are common. Cancer treatment decisions follow the pathology result.
Hospital stay is generally a few days for implants and about a week for flap techniques, with several weeks of limited activity. Plan to remain near the team until drains are removed and wounds are checked. Bring scans and pathology, and arrange follow-up, lymphoedema advice and any radiotherapy or hormone therapy locally.
