Sobre Bypass gástrico (Roux-en-Y)
Done laparoscopically under general anaesthesia, the surgeon divides the top of the stomach to form a pouch about the size of an egg, then connects it directly to a lower section of the small intestine. The bypassed stomach and first part of the bowel stay in place and are rejoined further down so digestive juices can still mix with food. The operation takes roughly one to two hours.
Most people lose a large share of their excess weight over twelve to eighteen months, and conditions such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnoea often improve. Results depend on your starting weight, the eating habits you adopt, regular activity and the surgeon's experience. Some weight regain after several years is common, and vitamin deficiencies are a long-term risk.
Plan to stay near the hospital for about a week, until you are drinking well and any early concerns have been checked. At home you will follow a staged diet, take lifelong vitamin and mineral supplements and need regular blood tests, so arrange a local doctor or dietitian before you travel.
