Sobre Fundoplicatura laparoscópica

The operation is done under general anaesthesia through about five small cuts in the upper abdomen and takes one to two hours. The surgeon frees the lower oesophagus, pulls it back into the abdomen if it has slipped up, and tightens the gap in the diaphragm. The top of the stomach is then wrapped around the oesophagus, completely or partly, and stitched.

Most people have good control of heartburn and regurgitation and can reduce or stop acid medicines, though some reflux can return over the years. Common side effects include difficulty swallowing and bloating for a few weeks, and some people cannot belch or vomit easily. Results depend on careful patient selection with tests such as endoscopy and pH monitoring.

Expect one to two nights in hospital and a soft or liquid diet for the first weeks, gradually returning to normal. Plan to stay nearby for about a week before flying. Bring your endoscopy, pH study and manometry reports. Eat small meals, chew well and avoid fizzy drinks, and have a follow-up with your doctor at home.

Geralmente indicado se

  • Proven GERD with symptoms despite proper medical treatment.
  • Large hiatus hernia with regurgitation or complications.
  • Patients who wish to avoid lifelong medicine.
  • Reflux with volume regurgitation or aspiration.

Pode ser necessário esperar se

  • Reflux not confirmed by testing, since surgery may not help.
  • Poor oesophageal motility, where a partial wrap is needed or surgery is unsuitable.
  • Severe obesity, where a bariatric operation may be better.
  • Severe heart or lung disease making anaesthesia unsafe until optimised.
Como se preparar
  1. Upper endoscopy, pH monitoring and manometry are usually needed to confirm reflux and exclude oesophageal motility disorders.
  2. A barium swallow may show hernia size.
  3. Review acid-suppressing and other medicines with your doctor; do not stop them yourself.
  4. Lose excess weight and stop smoking before surgery where possible.
  5. Fasting and anaesthetic assessment.
Perguntas para fazer ao seu cirurgião
  1. Has my reflux been proven with tests?
  2. Which type of wrap do you recommend and why?
  3. What are the chances of difficulty swallowing or bloating?
  4. Will the hiatal gap be repaired with mesh?
  5. What is your experience with this operation?
  6. What diet and follow-up do I need at home?
Sinais de alerta ao comparar hospitais
  • Surgery offered without pH testing or endoscopy.
  • No manometry before surgery.
  • Promises of complete cure of all symptoms.
  • No dietary instructions after surgery.
  • Surgeon who has rarely performed anti-reflux surgery.
